The bluestone patio was screened from the neighbors with a wall of arborvitae. Lush perennial gardens provide flower cutting opportunities and color to offset the green wall.

This site 30’ above the Connecticut River offers 180 degree panoramic views. The client wanted a modern house & landscape that would take advantage of this amazing locale, blurring the lines between inside and outside. The project sites a main house, guest house / boat storage building, multiple terraces, pool, outdoor shower, putting green and fire pit. A long concrete seat wall guides visitors to the front entry accentuated by a tall ornamental grass backdrop. Local boulders, rivers stone and River Birch where also incorporated into the entry landscape, borrowing from the materiality of the Connecticut River below. The concrete facades of the house transition into concrete site walls extending the architecture into the landscape. A flush Ipe Wood deck surrounds 2 sides of the pool opposite an architectural water fall. Concrete paving slabs disperse into lawn as it extends towards the river. A series of free-standing concrete screen walls further extends the architecture out while screening the pool area from the neighboring property. Planting was selected based upon the architectural qualities of the plants and the desire for it to be low-maintenance. A fire pit extends the pool season well into the shoulder seasons and provides a good viewing point for the river.

At the base of a stretch of steep bluffs along the shores of Puget Sound, this home was knocked from its foundation by a series of slope failures and landslide events nearly a decade ago. Although the process of unearthing and restoring the site was painstaking, taking nearly five years to accomplish, the current site conditions give no indication of the previous devastation.
The waterfront is now a beautiful and rustic coastal setting, seemly far removed from the nearby city. This salt-sprayed environment requires a hardy planting palette unlike most other gardens. To survive direct exposure to salt and prevailing winds, site planning preparation needed to adhere to a different set of rules. Large stones were used to visually connect one to the expansive panoramic aspect of the site, while also serving to add stability to a slope that inherently migrated. We used predominantly local stone such as granite for its regional look, providing dramatic and natural shapes. The courtyard gardens in the upland portion of the garden are much more formal. Situated directly off the dining room, this garden space was crafted as an extension of the interior.
The garden as a whole is a whimsical and natural retort to the earlier ruin that devastated the area.

This house could not be seen from the street, so the owners wanted something that would catch the eye and be welcoming. We created a second entrance of sorts with the focal point stairs that lead the eye into the woodland and provide a glimpse of the home. The river stone wall hints at the mountain cabin home that will soon be seen. These meandering walls weave thru the landscape and add much interest to this previously linear and boring view. Large drifts of low maintenance ground covers and perennials were used for seasonal color. A few colorful annuals are scattered around in a purposeful manner to look like natural drifts of wildflowers.

One-of-a-kind and other very rare plants are around every corner. The view from any angle offers something new and interesting. The property is a constant work in progress as planting beds and landscape installations are in constant ebb and flow.

Two poured in place concrete retaining walls create terraces around the property. These retaining walls and a swale along the property line ensure that water runoff is redirected on site, an important element for this LEED Gold certified property.
