Floral Abundance
Floral Abundance
Firecracker, LLCFirecracker, LLC
This active family with two young boys wanted a place to grow food, lounge in the front yard with friends and have blooms upon blooms of midwestern flowers to enjoy. Custom tuteurs, vegetable beds and benches frame the center of the garden, surrounded by low maintenance flowering shrubs, trees and perennials. Evergreen grasses form the understory of the borders. A bulb layer will be installed summer of 2017. Photo credit: Naomi Goodman

In south Seattle, a tiny backyard garden needed a makeover to add usability and create a sitting area for entertaining. Raised garden beds for edible plants provide the transition between the existing deck and new patio below, eliminating the need for a railing. A firepit provides the focal point for the new patio. Angles create drama and direct flow to the steel stairs and gate. Installed June, 2014. Photography: Mark S. Garff ASLA, LLA

These four custom cedar raised beds were constructed at the Seattle Urban Farm Co headquarters and delivered, fully assembled, to the clients rooftop deck. Each of the four raised beds include a cold frame structure that sits 2ʼ above the raised bed with interchangeable south-angled panels: greenhouse paneling for winter and shade cloth covering for summer. This addition to the raised beds will allow the client to continue growing crops throughout the year in the unique microclimate of a roof, protecting crops from excess heat, cold, and wind. Vegetable and flower garden with Olla irrigation system. Water seeps through the walls of unglazed 'Olla', these vessels can be used to irrigate plants. The Olla is buried in the ground next to the roots of the plant to be irrigated. The Olla is filled with water, which gradually seeps into the soil to water the roots of the plant. It is an efficient method, since no water is lost to evaporation or run-off.

An under-utilised corner of the garden was transformed into a romantic apiary, or bee-yard, featuring brightly painted hives and vintage furniture. The pebbles are a practical surface for working on the hives and retain water for the plants. Plants selected are a mix of bee-friendly perennials, herbs and vegetables, including dahlia, salvia leucanthe, anenome japonica and dianthus, buckwheat, blue kale, rhubarb, and silver lemon thyme. Woolly thyme, festuca coxii and purple alyssum soften the pebbles. Photos by Dee McQuillan

Originally part of the Woodchester Park Estate, Woodchester Park is famous for its main house, Woodchester Mansion. The Mansion is one of England’s finest examples of an early Arts and Craft and Gothic Revival House and features the work of a number of celebrated 19th Century academics and architects. The house and outbuildings that house Richard’s studios were originally part of the model home farm. Run-down, asset stripped and sanitised, it was sensitively refurbished with a design that gives a distinct nod to their original use.

Aralia: Innovation in Landscape DesignAralia: Innovation in Landscape Design
his traditional family garden based in Hertfordshire won Aralia Garden Design the BALI Landscape Design Excellence award in 2009. A young professional, sociable family strong on traditional values was the key influence in Aralia’s romantic garden design for this Hertfordshire home. With the side and rear garden to landscape, Aralia used new oak, reclaimed rustic bricks and natural slate paving stones to remodel into separate garden rooms, each with its own function and personality. Reclaimed brick pillars with climbers make the play lawn a lovely area – children are within sight at all times and the pergola provides shade in the summer months, in addition to a whimsical living willow arbour in the shape of an igloo. Being a parent has enabled Patricia and her Aralia landscape design team to understand the positive impact that good garden design can have on family life! A large, flat terrace became a split-level space – the lower terrace linking the extension and lounge and an upper terrace with slate paving. Here 8 – 10 people can dine in relative privacy and higher maintenance planting was recommended with texture, shape, colour and fragrance of prime importance. The Kitchen Garden is made up of 4 raised beds, edged with distressed new oak sleepers. Vegetables, herbs and a greenhouse are encapsulated within one area with borders of well behaved shrubs and grasses, lavender and topiary balls elsewhere. Aralia provided a full Landscape Design & Build service, working with a multi-functional team of sub-contractors.

Wattlebird EcoWattlebird Eco
Wattlebird Eco was commissioned to furnish and style this rustic outdoor space for a family with two young children. The brief was to make it more habitable and functional for relaxing together as a family. With the client’s input, we chose to utilise existing outdoor wicker chairs that had weathered beautifully, and updating them with new cushions upholstered in quality outdoor fabric with green credentials. Locally sourced timber logs were brought in as stools and side tables and their flourishing little veggie cart was brought closer to the scene to get the kids more involved with harvesting their own leafy greens. A locally made hammock chair swings in the breeze inviting some quiet reading when time permits!
