The patio border features quintessential plantings for any Twin Cities garden: hydrangeas, arborvitae, boxwood, nepeta, astilbe, and a columnar birch in the corner.
The arbors along the garage will eventually fill in with clematis vines – softening the look and adding more color to the empty wall. Chunky hardwood mulch has a great visual texture and will add nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.

Regenesis Ecological DesignA meandering flagstone pathway is bordered by a thoughtful curving retaining wall and drought-tolerant plantings that attract birds + butterflies: Salvia greggii 'Flame' (Red Texas Sage), Calluna vulgaris (Scotch Heather), Lavandual angustifolia (English Lavender), and native Arctostaphylos columbiana (White-Leafed Manzanita).
DDLA Design Landscape ArchitectureCompleted in 2016, this renovated residence features a clean and modern feel in the design and material selections. The project features concrete step pads, outdoor living areas, a new modern pool with tanning ledge, raised spa and fountain elements along with a clean, new concrete pool terrace for outdoor entertaining. The yard was also planted with extensive, simple and low-maintenance landscaping to provide privacy and screening for the owners.
BK Landscape DesignAward winning hillside renovation with concrete walls and informal 'bocce court'
Design constraints: Full sun and steep hillside
Planting design: This yard started as a blank hillside that had a steep slope. BKLD provided consultation and design work to develop the hillside with a series of terraced walls to create a bocce court. The bocce court was done in an informal fashion with artificial turf so the client could entertain with the space and have the 'look' of green. This turned out to be a great low maintenance and drought tolerant way to add useable space as well as a softer view from the upper deck. Existing Oaks were all kept and designed around carefully with composite decking. The Oaks make for some great shadow play and is quite the dynamic space as the sun angles move thru out the day.

Little Miracles DesignsIn a suburb less than 3 miles from Manhattan an old house underwent a major facelift. I had a good fortune of being invited to participate on the garden design and installation.
In the front a simple corten steel frame lifts an arrangement of Carex Pensilvanica, that will mature into a lawn that will not need mowing. Playful clusters of Boxwoods add structure and winter interest.
