House Ideas for Greg
As I think about how we will use the house and the traffic flow - we will most likely go in and out of the kitchen door most often - so maybe we put some type of coat and boot storage and bench near the kitchen door. But we don't have the space inside - so maybe on the outside - seems strange - but it will have a roof and there could be a bench to put on shoes, etc. and the storage could have doors to protect what is inside from dirt, etc. .
HI Greg - for the island or additional work space in the kitchen. I like the idea of the furniture piece to add character. Having a custom piece built is fine or if we nail down the dimensions, I love antique shopping in Europe and once we can go out, I would enjoy finding the right piece to be an island.
Like this fireplace and also the doors opening to outside. I like the shape of this stone as-well-as the random rubble pattern. We like rounded river-rock too, so a factor on what we actually use may be what’s available close by and naturally. We mentioned before that, if possible, we’d like to use the rock that we excavate from on-site. If excavated rock is minimal or poor quality we incorporate it in landscape for retaining walls. Also, with this fireplace and stone generally, I tend to like the look of wider at the bottom and narrowing upwards.
We like the overall look of this house - the amount of timber, the board and batten. We would not paint/stain red, maybe use a light stain or even leave it natural to weather. Greg, what do you think about the durability and patina of western red cedar, aspen, etc? But overall we like the simple, clean look of this Alaskan Cabin.
Like the amount of timber and also like the variety of ceiling - painted main ceiling with wood accent in office room (see next pic). Like the detail, for example dovetail joints on the timber frame. This project has a window seat that we like but haven't been able to find the space/location for a windowseat yet.
