Archadeck of AustinOur clients wanted the dramatic look of a pergola for their kitchen with additional coverage for shade and protection from rain, too. A pergola over a specific section sets off that area and defines it as an outdoor room. As you may know, some pergolas provide more shade than others. It all depends on the pergola design. This large two-beam pergola, attached to the house, is designed for shade with purlins that are close together. The pergola also has a translucent cover that filters UV rays, blocks heat, and shields the outdoor kitchen from rain.

While we didn’t install the granite countertops, we did install the smooth, cream Lueders stone surface that supports the clients’ Big Green Egg. You can see these homeowners plan to do a lot of cooking outdoors. In addition to the Big Green Egg they have a grill, a griddle, a refrigerator, storage space, warming drawers and more. With bar seating at the counter, their guests will be able to visit with the chef easily.

Archadeck of AustinThe deck railings are Solutions aluminum railings in bronze. For the lighting on the deck railing posts we used Dekor up/down lights. We also designed the pergola with lighting that shines down onto the deck. The effect of the lights on this beautiful deck at night is just stunning!!

Archadeck - ColumbusWe also installed a beautiful white vinyl pergola from the same company that made their railing, Mt. Hope Fence. To maximize the amount of shade they could expect from the pergola, we adjusted the lathing across the top of the pergola to a 30-degree angle. The angle of the lathing and the pergola’s orientation to the sun’s path affect the amount of shade a pergola will provide.

Archadeck of AustinThe pergola over the upper deck is built with cedar, and the skirting around the upper deck is cedar, too. For the skirting around the pool deck we used Hardieboard.
Archadeck of AustinUnder the pool deck we installed double joists to accommodate the weight of the hot tub. We built a huge storage area under the deck, large enough to walk into – about 8 feet high. We finished off the storage area with 2-inch gravel to ensure proper drainage and avoid wash out. The service panel for the hot tub is under the deck, and we installed lighting there to provide visibility when service is required.
