A secluded courtyard garden, alpine planting, slate stone walls and relaxing terrace… a private party garden. More than 20 tonnes of construction materials were needed, managed and expertly constructed in this creative landscaped environment.
Brief
A courtyard garden that had been left for many years, was very much in need of a re-design.
The planting and natural stone terrace had to be updated, reworked and transformed into a new garden.
The abundance of alpine trees and succulent planting was something that had to be enhanced. The entertaining terrace needed redesigning, it was essential that the new materials spoke the same language as the existing weathered landscape.
Design
The open terraced area that cried out for a reclaimed looking terrace. The surrounding raised area is complimented with the tactile nature and appearance of this weathered looking composite decking, although we prefer natural materials it was a perfect match.
Millboard Weathered decking does have the look and feel of a reclaimed and very old looking plank of real wood. The colour, Vintage, is a perfect match for this project.
A floating bench arrangement perfectly constructed in amongst the alpine Tier stone cladding surrounded by the planting. A satisfying place to sit amongst the overwhelming planting.
Imported from Germany, a planting companion to the scheme was the Pinus Mugo tree. Bare stemmed and look stunning when illuminated in the evening.

Urban Oasis Landscape DesignWe started by levelling the top area into two terraced lawns of low water Kurapia and nearly doubling the space on the lower level with retaining walls. We built a striking new pergola with a graphic steel-patterned roof to make a covered seating area. Along with creating shade, the roof casts a movie reel of shade patterns throughout the day. Now there is ample space to kick back and relax, watching the sun spread its glow on the surrounding hillside as it makes its slow journey down the horizon towards sunset. An aerodynamic fan keeps the air pleasantly cool and refreshing. At night the backyard comes alive with an ethereal lighting scheme illuminating the space and making it a place you can enjoy well into the night. It’s the perfect place to end the day.
Twisted Rock Terrascape & Design, Inc.A complete front yard makeover that started with some old massive trees and a sloped front yard in dead grass. We designed and built an absolutely beautiful new front yard that serves our clients in their green thumb endeavours!! Utilizing Kodah wall block we built stepped raised planters as retaining to create tiers and poured an exposed aggregate wide front entrance sidewalk with entrance pillars and coach lighting. We also left one large spruce and "spruced it up" with some fieldstone to cover the roots. Talk about curb appeal!!

Timber slat wall hides pool pumps and equipment, a vertical wall and pool seating/storage units. Rendered retaining walls provide an opportunity for planting within the pool area. Frameless glass pool fence. Lawn.
Mediterrasian LandscapesThis couple wanted to make their typical San Francisco backyard into something special. The yard had some nice plants but little useable space or attractive ground treatment. They had built a kidney-shaped planter with block walls as a weekend project a few years back, and they wanted to keep this. We came up with a design that used the kidney-shaped planter as a focal point. We added a lot of useable space with a bi-level concentric circular patio. By constructing the patio on two levels, we were able to keep most of the excavated soil on site instead of bringing it to the landfill. The outer circle consists of interlocking concrete pavers, while the raised inner circle is paved with natural Arizona flagstone. We enhanced the kidney planter by making another circular planter around it from matching wall blocks. The circular tree beds add interest by echoing the circle theme of the yard.

Pro-Land Landscape Construction Inc.We wanted to create multiple functional spaces, perfect for them to entertain as they expressed to us their love of hosting. We designed two additional structures. A timber frame cabana with TV wall and fire feature create a large lounge space perfect for entertaining late into the evening. We worked with the original grade and added retaining walls with a lot of planting to separate the spaces and add green to the large interlock patios. Then, to anchor the dining space, a timber pergola provides some shade but mostly creates an intimate space for gathering.
UserProving the good life doesn't have to be all about muddy allotments and wonky parsnips. Built towards the back of a large North-facing garden to maximise sun, it's comprised of a cottage style glass house, hardwood raised beds and cut-flower beds. Small design features such as old whisky barrels working as a water-butt, antique rhubarb forcers and an handmade oak bench help to create a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea whilst sowing seeds or taking a break from digging up homegrown potatoes.
