Till GardensThis New York City Rooftop was constructed to be an urban oasis for our clients. Plantings included some traditional elements with boxwood and a mix of more wild perennials and grasses. The rooftop skyline overlooks the new the World Trade Center Freedom Tower.

Amber Freda Garden DesignCheck out the spectacular views on this Brooklyn rooftop garden! Our design included a total makeover of a previously barren space, including replacing the dingy looking concrete pavers with ipe wood deck tiles. We also designed a custom L-shaped ipe bench with seats that lift up for storage and planters filled with soft grasses built into the back of the bench. The lush looking plantings in this garden are in a mix of ipe and fiberglass pots and include Tardiva hydrangeas, white multi-stem birch trees, Mexican feather grasses, boxwoods, angelonia, purple coneflower, and a weeping redbud tree. The planters are illuminated with LED low-voltage up-lights for a dramatic nighttime effect.

Christy Webber LandscapesYour average two-car garage offers only 400 square feet of roof deck, but that doesn’t mean it can’t provide an array of outdoor functions and features to suit your everyday needs. In this example, our design brief required just that. As a busy professional couple, the roof deck needed to offer both a peaceful space to work from home, as well as a comfortable space to get away from work, entertain and relax. To that end, the roof offers a number of surfaces to set up a laptop and then immediately forget any work woes and fire-up the grill, pour a glass of wine, call some friends over (or not) and wind down. And with the addition of retractable outdoor canopies and curtains, the space becomes an adjustable enclave to its densely populated urban surroundings.

David Keegan Garden Design & Landscape ConsultancyRoof gardens are a great way to utilise not only a flat rood but the elevated views that generally go with them. I designed this roof garden in Alderley Edge to do exactly that as it affords sweeping views out to the open countryside. The addition of an outdoor kitchen in the designs including a double fridge and fully plumbed in sink makes this a great all-round space for entertaining whilst the pergola offers some useful shade from the sun and rain. The addition of the wood burner pizza bread oven also adds a cosy spot to sit with blazing flames adding a warming glow to a chilly evening. In the before picture the roof footprint for the roof garden was a lot smaller but this was increased as pert of a major renovation of the house. The raised bed planters are not only filled with ornamental plants but also contain a host of herbs for use in cooking making the planting scheme an interactive addition to the overall aesthetic. The roof garden itself site within a much larger project including a freshly designer orchard and wildflower meadow. Designs for ground level are due to be installed over the coming months.
