Roland Oehme Landscape ArchitectureThis is an urban single family home situated on a narrow lot that is about 1/8 of an acre and is only 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I designed a completely new garden and installed everything along with the client’s help. The garden I designed consisted of an ornamental grass garden, a xeriscape garden with decomposed granite mounds, fruit trees and shrubs located throughout, a jungle forest garden, and raised brick vegetable beds in the rear. Previously, there was a wood deck covering almost the entire property that was removed by the owner. We installed root guard around all of the walkways. I installed the raised brick vegetable beds and walkways around the vegetable beds. Many of the plants were chosen to provide food and habitat for pollinators as well. Dozens of fruiting plants were located in the garden. So, it is called the “Garden of Eatin”.

We imported about 5 truckloads of sand in order to raise the sand level 16 to 18 inches to allow views of the beach - before, it felt like there was a barricade between you and the ocean. It was an unlovely and unusable space. We created a great gathering area with a custom built flagstone bench and several large flagstone slabs for the fire pit. We found the perfect contemporary furniture and placed it around the fire pit. The furniture is custom made with Ipe wood, pre-cast concrete, embed sea glass, aggregate and fossil shells. It had to be heavy enough to not blow away or wander down the beach.

This side yard is shaded by the three story main house beside it. Rainfall drains between the buildings. The natural stone pieces serve as stepping stones and the gravel holds them in place and allows water to percolate into the soil.

UserStone and planting design and installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Chris first designed and installed the tumbled bluestone walkway for this aromatic Cape Cod cottage style garden. He wanted to give it a little flare so he inflected the curve as opposed to creating a straight line. Chris flanks the pathway with two native female berrying Eastern Red Cedars and two native blooming Rhododendron viscosum (Honeysuckle Azalea) cultivars, one pink one yellow. The client requested a fragrant garden, hence the native Azaleas and foundation border lilies among Lavender and many fragrant native plants.

What was once a rather nondescript area with "filler" greenery has now become an inviting walk through a lush tropical setting. Woodling Landscape DesignThe beautiful Westside of Santa Cruz is known for surfing, beaches and homes with small lots. Our main project goal was to maximize outdoor space and create additional rooms that would enlarge the overall living space in this cottage just steps from the beach. Large family gatherings, lots of grandkids and a few dogs inspired a walkable groundcover "lawn". We chose a light colored flagstone for the patio to contrast with the blue home. A long wall serves the dual purpose of additional seating and containing tall, thin plants that create privacy and a sense of enclosure. Plantings provide year-round color in primarily blues and yellows, and require very little water. With our perfect climate, nobody wants to stay indoors, and now this family is utilizing their space to the fullest extent!
