Tish Landscape DesignA new cottage was situated in back of a historic home in downtown Palo Alto. The task was to incorporate the new cottage to the existing landscape. A poured-in-place patio allows the homeowner and her dogs to have a place to sit in the sun, while a dry stack wall delineates the patio edge. Under a canopy of Redwood trees, water-wise plantings create a lush and inviting space.

Design Farm GroupIpe wood accents help highlight the black exterior color of the this Cape re-design. In order to integrate the sloped terrain and create ample gathering spaces, we created various levels in the landscape. The terraced levels help open up the narrow space and provide better views to the Hudson River below. Ornamental grasses and ferns and a simple palette of white plantings create dimension against the black architecture. Local fieldstone and up cycled brownstone walls give definition and structure to the landscape.

Pro-Land Landscape Construction Inc.Forest Hill South was designed by Mark Pettes of MDP and Pro-Land was hired to construct the project in 2012. Both natural flagstone and interlock was used on this project, designed to compliment one another as well as the house. Decorative walls retain the grade from the driveway and are faced with brick to tie into the house. Flagstone stepping stones laid in the grass bring you from the front landing into the backyard. The same flagstone is carried through the back and laid on the lounge and pool patio. Planting was added for some colour and privacy from neighbours.

Art & Architecture IncYear one identified that even with a 12 feet wide paved drive, visitors would often drive right over the plants. Rather than add more expensive and unattractive curbs that can damage tire side walls, granite boulders were added to notify poor drivers that they are off the pavement, and thus protect the plants.
Coppercreek LandscapingWhen the homeowners bought their house, the builder had left them with a practically nonexistent back yard. Boulder retaining walls sat just a few feet away from the house and deck, and behind the property a gravel parking lot loomed over the house. Rebuilding the retaining walls created space for the homeowners to actually enjoy their yard. Their two energetic dogs have some space to play, and the selection of native plants welcomes birds into their back yard. As the plants mature, they will provide privacy and screening from the parking lot.

Outdoor Lighting PerspectivesThis landscape lighting project was primarily in the back yard, but this photo shows an interesting retro-fit lighting effect we installed in the front yard. This existing house number box was lit from the inside by our wide-effect Ozark fixture, making for a stunning glow effect.
While this was an existing box, our in-house metal fabrication facility has crafted similar boxes and shapes with cutouts of all sorts. These are great ways to illuminate a street number or the name of a property, and is available in any desired size or finish.
These work particularly well here in Canada, since the point of illumination is shielded from snow, making them excellent year-round effects for important house number and sign lighting.
