David HoganNew shrubs Podocarpus maki were installed as an instant screen to replace an existing shrub. They were selected because they are quite narrow and have an open elegant habit and wouldn’t be overbearing in the small space. They will grow thicker and taller but can be easily managed with some shaping which is highly recommended.
The existing wooden screen was replaced with a Kempas Screen (vertical slats) a natural timber and to harmonise two extra screens (horizontal slats) were installed, these break up the large expanse of the grey walls and add some contrast. This makes the space more intimate and contained.
A Chinese Star Jasmine (Thachelospermum jasminoides) was installed in front of one screen to replace a Pandorea jasminoides that wasn’t performing well. Wires were installed across the top from one wall to the other so the vine could climb across and create a frame looking from indoors.
The pond was newly waterproofed, a new pump installed and a Pond Filter, to keep the water clean for the fish.
Ground cover plants include, Mini Mondo, Midyim berry (Austromyrtus dulcis) ,Maidenhair fern, Native violet (Viola hederacea), Dichondra and other assorted ferns.
White pebbles (20mm) and larger were used with pieces of Serpentine Rock to decorate around the planting and stepping stones. The Serpentine was chosen for its dark blackish tones to blend in with the pond and existing stepping stones.
