Wagner HodgsonSituated on a 100 acre site, this landscape for a private residence draws it's inspiration from the classic mountain lodges of the northeast. Rich sweeping drifts of native perennials, grasses and shrubs create a relaxed, elegant composition that ground the home and define a variety of spaces for family gathering, entertaining and quiet reflection. Large caliper trees were planted to compliment the surrounding mature trees, providing a sense of permanence and timelessness. An existing pond was augmented and expanded for swimming with a 'diving rock' hand selected and perched at one end. The south-facing terrace is defined by large slabs of stone and a grand outdoor fireplace that gives way to views of the neighboring ski trails.

Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design LLCThe master plan for this south-facing woodland property celebrates dramatic topography, muscular canopy trees, remnant fieldstone walls, and native stone outcroppings. Sound vegetation management principles guide each phase of installation, and the true character of the woodland is revealed. Stone walls form terraces that traverse native topography, and a meticulously crafted stone staircase provides casual passage to a gently sloping lawn knoll carved from the existing hillside. Lush perennial borders and native plant stands create edges and thresholds, and a crisp palette of traditional and contemporary materials merge––building upon the surrounding topography and site geology.

This challenging site gave us the opportunity to transform an area beside the driveway into a putting green and bocce court. Reconfiguring the driveway and lawn made room for a restful sitting area to enjoy the beautiful sound of the waterfall and pond.
This project earned Windsor Companies a Merit Award for Excellence in Landscape Design from the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association.

This property in Lake Oswego, Oregon has a backyard that is almost all steep hillside. Using wood timbers and stones we are able to create winding pathways that make the space walkable. The boulders hold the steps in place and retain the slope at the same time.
