PYRAMIDS ARE MADE for climbing. That's what architect Ryan Singer realized the first time he clambered atop one of the two 8-footers shown here. "I could see everything—the ocean and the house I designed—from a fresh perspective," he says.
"It was amazing." Then he did what any kid would want to do: "I sat down and slid to the bottom."
The pyramids flank an entry walk in front of a home in Laguna Beach, California. Made of hard-packed clay soil (excavated during a driveway remodel) and covered by plastic mesh, each rises from a 12-foot square in-ground concrete retaining wall. Drip tubing beneath the mesh irrigates the soft fescue grass.
So how do you mow a nearly vertical lawn? It's not so hard as it looks: Start with a reel mower near the base, and then take a little off the top with a string trimmer.

Pro-Land Landscape Construction Inc.Pro-Land designed and constructed this double entrance driveway creating a grand statement and some major curb appeal for this home. A large heated concrete driveway has plenty of room for cars to park. Gardens full of green and white perennials and shrubs are a classic look throughout every season. Natural stone pillars and walls flank each side of the driveway allowing the entrances to be closed by iron gates when the client wants. Lastly, natural stone walls, on either side of the front porch tie everything together and add some extra character to the house.

Zones Landscaping Auckland Central Kate RyanThe owners of this lovely Glendowie property felt that it was time for an update. After removing their front
driveway and building a garage, the family deliberated on whether or not to have a pool installed or a lawn area
created for their kids to play on. After deciding on a large lawn, they had a design drawn up. From there, they contacted Zones and were put in touch with
Kate Ryan - their local landscaping specialist. After meeting Kate for an initial consultation, they decided they had found the right person for the job.
Kate worked with her customers to develop a planting plan - incorporating plants that were both hardy and
attractive. The family specifically wanted to work with a company who could take care of the project for them
- allowing them to carry on with their busy everyday lives. The Zones project management process provided them with a perfect solution.
“My customers work full time and wanted a project-managed service for their large job, which involved coordinating so many tradespeople. They didn’t
have to leave work numerous times to arrange everything as I took care of that for them”, explains Kate. “The front was a blank canvas that we completely
landscaped. We included a new deck, automatic louvre with mesh screen sides, new concrete paths with granite tiling and banding, a concrete basketball court,
an automatic driveway gate and louvred fence and, lastly, garden lighting.”
Kate worked with Impact Gates to produce the sturdy and practical gate, while Pacific Powder Coating made the louvre and fence panel, which she says
required extra attention to detail.“The automatic gate, pedestrian gate and louvre fence were challenging to
design due to the existing hedging on either side. We spent time getting the positions right and included a special flush roller in the concrete drive so you
don’t drive over a bump like you usually
would with this type of design.”
For increased functionality, smooth concrete paths now connect the driveway to the house and outdoor
entertainment zone. In the entranceway, granite tiled banding really makes a grand impact as you approach the stairs. Along the pathways, new planting
makes a peaceful addition, as does carefully planned garden lighting. Overall, it’s a design that truly
encompasses the style of the home and its owners, while each feature has been carefully selected to enhance the next.
“The planting is smart and balanced with the front door entrance”, says Kate. “The deck and louvre with screens create an outdoor room the clients love, along with beautiful garden lighting and feature lights for the huge tree.”
Kate notes the new deck area is a particular standout:
“The best decision was probably adding the pull-down screens to create a warm and sheltered outdoor room under the new louvre roof.”
It is a result that these homeowners will be able to enjoy for years to come, while easily maintaining it with the help of Zones.

Campion Walker LandscapesTo anchor a modern house, designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners, Campion Walker brought in a mature oak grove that at first frames the home and then invites the visitor to explore the grounds including an intimate culinary garden and stone fruit orchard.
The neglected hillside on the back of the property once overgrown with ivy was transformed into a California native oak woodland, with under-planting of ceanothus and manzanitas.
We used recycled water to create a dramatic water feature cut directly into the limestone entranceway framed by a cacti and succulent garden.

Professional Gardener & Landscape Services, LLCThis property was design and installed in 2008. This is the first comprehensive Sustainable landscape in the State of Michigan. This comprehensive sustainable landscape features permeable paver driveway and walkway, porous concrete city sidewalk, large rain gardens, rain barrels, and recycled products such as recycled concrete for the base material and finished compost in the planting beds. Everything listed was installed over the course of 6 weeks and the homeowner has loved the fact that they have created a landscape that greatly helps the environment. This project was completed in the Old Westside Neighborhood by Sexton High School. As you can see in the pictures provided, we drastically changed the front of this home and the gardens have grown into very lush plantings. Specimen plants include (3) Weeping Alaskan Cedar, (1) Large Weeping White Pine, and (1) Weeping Beech. The plantings have created 4 season interest.
