Hannah Martin DesignIn this project, the challenge was to create a contemporary garden that is an extension of the living space from the house. I designed a series of garden rooms which had a different purpose but flow seamlessly together, from one space to the next. Large sliding doors from the open plan kitchen open out onto an enclosed deck with an intimate dining area. The spaces are linked by a cream Cotswold gravel path edged in light toned granite, which brings unity in the garden. Lawns at the front of the property are set into large Corten steel rings, softened by naturalistic planting of ornamental grasses and perennials carefully selected for the sandy free draining soil. The design provides spaces to relax and entertain enjoying the sunshine outside.

We utilized natural rock, large southern Alberta native trees and plantings, with rock slabs for steps down the walkout sides of the home. The new asphalt driveway will be going in now that the landscaping is complete.

They wanted as maintenance free as possible but with a definite budget in mind. Lastly, they wanted to begin to grow a lot of vegetables at home and therefore wanted some raised cedar planters to suit their needs. We utilized rundle for the bedding areas and concrete edges for ease of maintaining the property in their retirement years. Great project!!
