Searle & TaylorAs part of an expansive extension to a Victorian property in a picturesque village just outside Winchester, Searle & Taylor was appointed to design and make a capacious bespoke in-frame Shaker kitchen with a separate walk-in pantry.
The clients were seeking a traditional handpainted kitchen with a statement island as the central focus of the room. At the end of the extension are double doors leading to the garden so the design was created to ensure that the island and pendant lights were completely symmetrical with this feature. With storage a key component, there are 26 pull-out drawers in the kitchen and pantry, all featuring solid oak dovetail drawer boxes, plus four open vegetable wicker basket drawers. All cabinetry is painted in Inkwell by Colour Trend Paints.
Darren Taylor designed breakfront cabinetry using a 30mm chamfer frame with oak carcases for the cooking and wet runs and all feature tongue and grooved end panels. For the cooking area, opposite the island, he designed symmetrical cupboards and drawers on both sides of the Rangemaster range cooker, with a silver antique glass splashback above it within a bow fronted Adam-style canopy.
The large canopy features a central ceiling-height cornice with a lacquered oak overmantel shelf complete with corbel supports with a horizontal dowel that runs through them used for hanging cooking utensils. Slim cabinets on either side of the canopy include oak internal shelving, with one that houses a knife rack mounted on the interior door. Each features single spice drawers beneath, while additional floating cabinets extending from the canopy feature further small spice drawers to the right and left. A pair of integrated fridge freezers are concealed by floor to ceiling cabinetry décor fronts.
The wet run is situated beneath a large window, extending at a right angle, and includes storage and utility cupboards, an integrated dishwasher and a cupboard for pull-out bins. Centrally located beneath the window is a double farmhouse sink by Villeroy & Boch, which incorporates a waste disposal unit by InSinkerator, and a satin brass tap by Perrin & Rowe. Specified throughout the kitchen, on the island, and in the walk-in pantry, is a 20mm thick quartz worktop with pencil edging in Blanco Zeus by Silestone. This surface is also used as an upstand and as a stone sill situated beneath the sink to help protect the cabinetry from water damage.
To both sides of the double doors leading to the garden are symmetrical wall-mounted dresser cabinets with open shelving and tongue and groove back panels. These are used to store cookery books and decorative items and they connect with one another via a flyover shelf above the doorway. Beneath each are further storage cupboards.
On the working side of the 4.7 metre x 1.4 metre island feature are 10 symmetrical 900mm wide drawers to accommodate pans, plates and crockery. On the side facing the walk-in pantry the worksurface overhangs at the centre to accommodate four counter stools beneath for informal dining. At each end, are 900mm cutlery drawers above vegetable baskets on hardwood runners. At each corner of the island are square chamfered legs with lamb’s tongue edging that surround tongue and grooved end panels. Above the island are three pendant lights by Jim Lawrence Lighting.
The walk-in pantry is situated in an original part of the house and during the design process it was agreed to showcase the original brickwork. This room features a combination of enclosed cabinetry for storing dry foodstuffs with plenty of open shelving to house bowls, baskets and vases.
Throughout the kitchen and the walk-in pantry, a mix of Armac Martin antique brass ball knob and pull-cup handles, together with brass butt hinges all add to the contemporary Shaker aesthetic.
Handmade Kitchen CoWe enjoyed breathing new life into this kitchen we originally fitted in 2016 for the previous owner. The new owner loved the kitchen so much that as part of their plans to renovate the property, they wanted to keep the kitchen for its sturdiness and look. The layout was adapted to fit the new space, new paint, new worktops, new appliances. This has all added up to creating a fantastic open-plan industrial style kitchen.
The furniture is in frame classic shaker with a beaded front frame made of tulipwood. The internal carcass is made of an oak veneer for a real oak look and feel but the sturdiness of MDF. Hand painted in Farrow & Ball Railings.
We also supplied the Quooker boiling water tap.

A traditional kitchen with handmade cabinetry and dovetail joinery was required for this sunny seaside renovation.
The Brief
An ultra-luxurious, authentic kitchen was required for this development project undertaken by our contract department. To tie in with high ceilings and sash windows a traditional theme was sought to impress potential suitors of this wonderful property.
The property is a four-storey townhouse near to the seaside in Worthing and has been developed to an exceptional standard for a private client.
Design Elements
The developer already had an idea of the layout of the space, with a wall-to-wall run and island as the preferred configuration.
To add the authentic, traditional element to the project our handmade British kitchen option from Mereway Kitchens was required, boasting handmade cabinetry and dovetail joinery. A Diamond Grey finish has been opted for, which combines nicely with the sparkling quartz work surfaces.
Special Inclusions
To match the premium furnishings with premium functionality, a combination of Siemens cooking appliances has been utilised. Notable inclusions are a Siemens warming drawer, a combination oven and a Caple wine cabinet.
Integrated appliances have been opted for in the form of Siemens refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher.
Project Highlight
The real standout of this project is the handmade cabinetry, which matches the grandeur of this property in every way. The dovetailed oak joinery is exhibited across all drawers and cupboards in this kitchen space.
Understated door knobs and cup handles have been chosen to match the traditional style.
The End Result

Simon Taylor FurnitureOur clients were seeking a classic and stylish Shaker kitchen with a contemporary edge, to complement the architecture of their five-year-old house, which features a modern beamed ceiling and herringbone flooring. They also wanted a kitchen island to include banquette seating surrounding one end of a large industrial-style dining table with an Ash wooden table top that our clients already owned. We designed the main run of in frame cabinetry with a classic cornice to completely fit within the recessed space along the back wall behind the island, which is hand-painted in Stewkey Blue by Farrow & Ball. This includes a central inglenook and an overmantel that conceals a Siemens canopy extractor hood above a white Everhot range cooker. Overhead cabinets and undercounter storage cupboards were included within the design, together with oak dovetailed deep drawer storage boxes. A Samsung American-style fridge freezer was also integrated within the run. A 30mm thick quartz worktop in Tuscany colourway extends on either side of the range cooker and this is repeated on the kitchen island as well, with an overhang on both sides of the u-shaped design to accommodate bar stools beneath. In the centre of the island, we created u-shaped banquette seating upholstered in grey velvet to surround one end of the large rectangular dining table. To store their collection of fine wines, we specified two undercounter wine conditioners by Miele to fit within each end of the island to store reds, whites and Champagnes. Along the length of the island, facing the Everhot is a large ceramic double-bowl Belfast sink by Shaws of Darwen and a Quooker Cube tap, providing hot, cold, boiling and sparkling water. On the task side of the island, two 60cm dishwashers by Miele are integrated at either end of the cabinetry together with storage for pull-out bins and utility items.
On a further run to the left of the island, we designed and made a large Shaker two-door pantry larder, hand-painted in All White by Farrow & Ball and featuring deep dovetail drawer boxes beneath. Extending on either side of the pantry is natural oak contemporary open shelving to mix with the traditional design of the kitchen. A further freestanding cabinet with a natural solid oak top was handmade to sit beneath the client’s wall-mounted television. Cup handles and knobs are all brushed brass by Crofts and Assinder, with matching brass butt hinges.

John Lewis of HungerfordTucked away in a charming village in Berkshire, Karen and her husband Jerry extended their home and renovated their kitchen space to complete their dream countryside oasis. The spacious, open plan kitchen was inspired by the homes of Karen’s childhood in New Zealand where her big family always congregated around food and cooking in the kitchen. The new space is a drastic change from what they had before, where the kitchen was crammed into a small room at the front of the house.

A contemporary industrial feel modern kitchen with book matched stained oaks accents to an azure blue lacquered door mainly in curves. the surfaces are made up of 65mm poured concrete, oak end grain butchers block and a Richlite recycled paper breakfast bar. finished off with bronze mirror splashbacks and slate behind the main sink. A full compliment of Miele appliances including a down draft extractor. This kitchen really is a pleasure to work in.
