Simon Taylor FurnitureOur clients were seeking a classic and stylish Shaker kitchen with a contemporary edge, to complement the architecture of their five-year-old house, which features a modern beamed ceiling and herringbone flooring. They also wanted a kitchen island to include banquette seating surrounding one end of a large industrial-style dining table with an Ash wooden table top that our clients already owned. We designed the main run of in frame cabinetry with a classic cornice to completely fit within the recessed space along the back wall behind the island, which is hand-painted in Stewkey Blue by Farrow & Ball. This includes a central inglenook and an overmantel that conceals a Siemens canopy extractor hood above a white Everhot range cooker. Overhead cabinets and undercounter storage cupboards were included within the design, together with oak dovetailed deep drawer storage boxes. A Samsung American-style fridge freezer was also integrated within the run. A 30mm thick quartz worktop in Tuscany colourway extends on either side of the range cooker and this is repeated on the kitchen island as well, with an overhang on both sides of the u-shaped design to accommodate bar stools beneath. In the centre of the island, we created u-shaped banquette seating upholstered in grey velvet to surround one end of the large rectangular dining table. To store their collection of fine wines, we specified two undercounter wine conditioners by Miele to fit within each end of the island to store reds, whites and Champagnes. Along the length of the island, facing the Everhot is a large ceramic double-bowl Belfast sink by Shaws of Darwen and a Quooker Cube tap, providing hot, cold, boiling and sparkling water. On the task side of the island, two 60cm dishwashers by Miele are integrated at either end of the cabinetry together with storage for pull-out bins and utility items.
On a further run to the left of the island, we designed and made a large Shaker two-door pantry larder, hand-painted in All White by Farrow & Ball and featuring deep dovetail drawer boxes beneath. Extending on either side of the pantry is natural oak contemporary open shelving to mix with the traditional design of the kitchen. A further freestanding cabinet with a natural solid oak top was handmade to sit beneath the client’s wall-mounted television. Cup handles and knobs are all brushed brass by Crofts and Assinder, with matching brass butt hinges.

Base units - Shaker smooth painted in Farrow & Ball 'Stiffkey Blue' and contrasting units in Halifax Oak Synchronised Melamine. Worktop is 30mm Opal Carrara quartz with the small custom table topped with 50mm pp edged laminate in Chalk Ceramic.

Alexander KitchensAuthentic British Kitchen in Worthing, West Sussex
A traditional kitchen with handmade cabinetry and dovetail joinery was required for this sunny seaside renovation.
The Brief
An ultra-luxurious, authentic kitchen was required for this development project undertaken by our contract department. To tie in with high ceilings and sash windows a traditional theme was sought to impress potential suitors of this wonderful property.
The property is a four-storey townhouse near to the seaside in Worthing and has been developed to an exceptional standard for a private client.
Design Elements
The developer already had an idea of the layout of the space, with a wall-to-wall run and island as the preferred configuration.
To add the authentic, traditional element to the project our handmade British kitchen option from Mereway Kitchens was required, boasting handmade cabinetry and dovetail joinery. A Diamond Grey finish has been opted for, which combines nicely with the sparkling quartz work surfaces.
Special Inclusions
To match the premium furnishings with premium functionality, a combination of Siemens cooking appliances has been utilised. Notable inclusions are a Siemens warming drawer, a combination oven and a Caple wine cabinet.
Integrated appliances have been opted for in the form of Siemens refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher.
Project Highlight
The real standout of this project is the handmade cabinetry, which matches the grandeur of this property in every way. The dovetailed oak joinery is exhibited across all drawers and cupboards in this kitchen space.
Understated door knobs and cup handles have been chosen to match the traditional style.

Figura Kitchens & InteriorsA large family kitchen which flows perfectly into the new orangery. Designed using a variety of tactile surfaces including stone and wood. With a 3.5 metres long central island with unusual curved steps between the surfaces, it defines the space and is practical for incorporating storage, food preparation areas and is a wonderful focus for gathering people. There is also a walk in larder with marble surfaces for appliances and food storage.
Bath BespokeDark Blue Modern Kitchen. We used two key colours in the room—Railings very dark grey and very light grey ammonite. The island housed an induction hob and two Siemens cookers. We also incorporated some cleverly concealed soft close drawers, three each on opposite sides of the island. This allowed effective storage space for cutlery, appliances and pans. The island was finished with a stunning white silestone counter top.

UserIn this project, the clients extended the ground floor to create an open plan kitchen/dining/living space, which is the first thing that you see once entering the property. They wanted the overall interior to be contemporary, however wanted a traditional kitchen. The Shaker-style kitchen has been designed using Cheltenham shaker painted timber doors in powder blue, complemented with a white granite worktop. An inviting island has been included in the design to ensure that this is an ultimately a sociable space for the whole family and friends to enjoy. This feature also creates a link between the open plan, kitchen/dining area. The overall layout of the kitchen has been carefully considered with appliances being positioned in a way that it is easy for the clients to access things that they need within a practical working triangle. Space has been maximised within the design as storage solutions have been cleverly designed so that they are hidden behind doors, adding to the spacious feeling of the kitchen. The clients wanted to include colour into the design, this was through the means of using a large, bold blue splashback, which creates a dynamic contrast from the traditional shaker kitchen.
