Please help me with this living room!!
Hi everyone! My husband and I just moved into our new home mid-December, then promptly left to spend the holidays out-of-state. Now that we are back, I am finally attempting to tackle this living room. We have a large, caramel leather sectional sofa that was a pretty expensive gift from my in laws. It worked great in our last house, but I am not sure how to make it work with the colors here. Our hardwood floors are a little bit close to the color of the sectional for my liking! I want to break up all the light brown somehow.
We have an oversized ottoman that actually goes with a different sofa
(one we are using in a smaller room), and it doesn't fit in the room
with its couch, so we have been using it here for comfort reasons. It is a rich chocolate
brown that really does not match at all, nor does it help to break up
the brown situation! I want to put a slipcover over the ottoman, as well
as add in more throw pillows (and cover the Christmas ones in the
pictures!). I also need help with curtain color and wall/fireplace
decor. Really any and all suggestions are appreciated!!!
Please
excuse the random wires, shopping bags, and Christmas decorations in
the picture. We are still unpacking and taking down decorations. :)
The
fabric swatches in this pic are some that I ordered online as possible
ottoman or accent pillow cover materials. I wasn't so sure about them in
person though...figured I may as well upload them too!

Avete davanti un'avventura meravigliosa, non siate bramosi di finire questo banchetto in un sol boccone: attendere e assaporare ogni pietanza vi farà gustare tutti i piatti! Fuor di metafora: il bello di una casa grande è che vi concederà possibilità di sperimentare, anche con poco: un tappeto, una poang col suo poggiapiedi, un colore deciso* su una parete ed avrete riempito uno spazio di senso. Non ci sono "mobili da comprare [in una volta sola]". Questo è il più grosso sbaglio che possiate fare, date retta. Fate viaggi, accumulate foto, sorrisi, luci... il problema non è mai il vuoto di oggetti, ma di idee, di progetti e progettualità. E questa deve anche essere correlata alla vostra età, alle vostre necessità e bisogni, immediati e futuri: che non devono essere per forza trasformati in oggetti oggi, ma possono essere anche energia potenziale, in divenire, da trasformare/realizzare al momento giusto, domani, l'anno prossimo, tra cinque... Non abbiate paura di sbagliare... provate, girate, guardate - e ricominciate. O magari fatevi aiutare a farlo, con un bel progetto che sappia prevenire le vostre necessità, ma non abbiate il timore di realizzare tutto e subito! Coraggio :) (è bello diventare grandi!) * Ad esempio, le pareti colorate, o con affissi grandi quadri (o locandine del cinema) o gruppi di foto, o cartine geografiche eccetra, hanno bisogno di prospettiva per essere apprezzate: vuol dire non accostrare al muro nulla per i primi 80-100cm... (12) commentiIl Basalto è di formazione magmatica, non essendo composto da carbonato di calcio come il Marmo non teme i cibi acidi. Essendo una pietra naturale come tutte tende ad assorbire per garantire un'ottima resistenza alle macchie è necessario trattarlo con un oleo-idrorepellente o con la smaltatura che ne ottura i pori in modo che questa non possa assorbire i liquidi. Avrebbe con il basalto un piano cucina in pietra naturale (questo è sempre un valore aggiunto) con una durezza eccezionale, quindi molto resistente ai graffi e con un eccellente resistenza al calore trattandosi appunto di pietra lavica; inoltre la possibilità con la smaltatura di scegliere un qualsiasi colore senza andare a coprire le caratteristiche della pietra. (18) commentiCiao Alessandro, sul divano metterei una composizione di quadri, fotografie e stampe, ma non un pezzo unico, perché devi spezzare un po' (divano lungo, armadio grande); a parer mio le cartine del mondo sono già un po' troppo utilizzate, a meno che non siano un complemento per il tuo lavoro; lo spazio dedicato al lavoro è un po' caotico (io sono una disordinata). Hai una bella casa dalle sicure potenzialità, però hai più zone a cui apportare migliorie sia estetiche sia funzionali; immagino tu abbia già investito meritatamente non poco e adesso ti trovi un po' insoddisfatto ed in difficoltà. Da non Pro, ma da mera profana, ti consiglio il supporto di un professionista che ti costerà molto meno di quanto tu possa pensare (penso non più di un ultimo modello di smartphone di qualità): sarebbe davvero un peccato non valorizzare al massimo una casa così. Certo qui su Houzz trovi suggerimenti utili, ma quando l'intervento contempla più ambienti, a parer mio occorre una persona che possa vedere l'ambiente nella sua interezza, valutarne le esigenze - anche estetiche - ed armonizzare il tutto. Ti dico questo perché io sono forse un po' come te, senza offesa naturalmente; penso di avere gusto, di saper arredare bene una casa, di poter essere autonoma, ma poi forse pasticcio un po' e mi rendo conto che da sola non raggiungo il risultato desiderato. La parcella di un professionista la recuperi evitando un acquisto sbagliato oppure gioiendo per un risultato ottimale, per una soluzione inaspettata. La casa la dovrai vivere per alcuni o molti anni, perciò a parer mio è un ulteriore investimento da mettere in conto; ti confesso che fino a qualche anno fa non ci avrei mai pensato, ma oggi l'architettura, l'interior design si sono così evoluti che noi "umani", da non specialisti, non siamo quasi mai all'altezza di un progetto realmente appagante. Guarda qui su Houzz i professionisti che più ti ispirano con i loro progetti e poi chiedi dei preventivi; vedrai, in poco e con poco ti solleveranno da continui dubbi, pensieri, insoddisfazioni e ti offriranno la soluzione ideale che ti farà adorare la tua già bella casa.... mostra di piùCucina e ingresso
(12) commentiOppure potresti utilizzare il soggiorno (36,8 mq) come open space soggiorno cucina, eventualmente allargandolo di 1 m (diventerebbero 41,8 mq) o 1 metro e mezzo a scapito della stanza attigua (le due camere verso il balcone unite sarebbero invece di 34 mq) e trasformare la cucina in camera da letto e ridurre la stanza affacciata sul balcone per creare un secondo bagno contiguo al primo (per i bagni ho preso spunto da quelli visti qui https://www.houzz.it/discussions/5780325/ridistribuzione-spazi-zona-notte-help#n=14 La stanza in basso nella tua pianta misura 1+1,45+1,34x5=18,95; quella con affaccio sul balcone (tolto il bagno gemello dell'altro più o meno) 4x4,6=18,4; la cameretta 2x5,2=10,4, quindi secondo me hai margine per ripensare le misure di tutte e tre le camere. 8 anni faOkay first thing is a new ottoman and rug. What colors do you like? Or do you prefer all neutrals? Id avoid adding anymore brown. If you have any pics saved of the style of rooms you like, that would be really helpful. ie traditional, rustic, modern, etc. Based on your sofa and paint Im getting kind of a rustic transitional family vibe (see pics).
For the ottoman pick something with a metallic base as you dont need anything heavy and chunky. Below are some ideas
Some other general decor tips:
Invest in down pillow inserts. It looks and feels so much better. They will last and retain their shapes much longer. Id use nubby textured fabrics for your pillows -- wool, burlap, chunky knits.
Drapes or roman shades on Windows really warms and finishes the room. Probably a solid neutral esp if your rug is patterned.
Art and framed/matted family photos that you really love, hung at the proper height.
Lighting makes a huge difference. Think of lamps as art almost - metallics, colors, fabric shades add lots to a room.
Use metallics in place of brown in places like side tables accessories.

* If you prefer a cocktail ottoman for comfort, you can see lots of cocktail ottoman styles on our Houzz site or our blog.
* If a cocktail table is preferred, I love the options above that Maggys111 posted.
* To decide on colors - find a large piece of art that "speaks" to you. Once you find an inspiration piece you love, it will all start flowing from there. Example - our client loved the art we brought her below, which made her fabric decisions easy.
* Can you pull the sectional out about 8 or 10" so it's not shoved against the all? That will help it feel more spacious.
* A narrow console table behind the sectional would allow you to add another lamp and perhaps a large piece of pottery or a plant.
* Full length drapes add a lot to a room. They make ceilings feel MUCH taller! You can see before and after photos of what they do to change a room on our site....

I actually wasn't the one to pick out the wall color OR the sofa (lol), but I do love a mixture of rustic/modern vibe and really love metallic accents, so your suggestions were great! I took some pictures of other rooms in my house where I did actually pick things out so that might give you a little bit more of an idea of my general vibe....although, without all our Christmas decorations, the house is sooo plain and empty now!! (Hence why I am panicking and trying to figure out what to do! ;) We moved cross-country, so unfortunately a lot of our belongings didn't make the cut. :( Oh well--fresh start, right? Anyways, here are some pics of the rest of the (sparsely-decorated) house:

8 anni faA good place to start is with a focal point for the room - maybe a large canvas behind the sofa. Then start "color-weaving." Pick one or two colors in the artwork that you want to emphasize and pull out in other accessories, such as pillows, books and rugs. Because pillows and rugs are easier to find than art, I always select artwork for a project first. 8 anni faI agree that the third rug looks best here, and would give you most flexibility in pillows and other decor. I also like the blue rug, but you'll notice I removed the tan ottoman because it looks awful next to the white in the rug. This tells me that a rug like this could be problematic and limiting.

8 anni faHi everyone! So, it has been a couple of months since my original post... Since then, I have made several changes, and many of them were with your helpful suggestions! I'm not finished yet.... I was hoping that maybe some of you had some ideas of what to do with the two awkward spaces on the sides of the couch! We need end tables of some kind.... I was thinking espresso colored to match the floating shelves? But not sure how tall or if that is a good idea! Thank you friends!

8 anni faPull your shelves closer together so they relate to each other, and keep their width to no more than 3/4 the width of the sofa back. Lower them and use bigger stuff.
Pull the rug just under the sofa.
An iron and reclaimed wood table would look good here.
