Kitchen Cabinets: to paint or not to paint?

I bought this condo a few years ago and just loath the darkness of this kitchen. The floors match the cabinets -- not sure what they were thinking especially since the living/kitchen are small space to begin with. I've since painted the walls grey to tone down the red but I'm still not really happy with it. The cabinets are in perfectly good shape as are the floors so debating if I should paint them an antique white or not. It's hard for me to visualize. Will it be too much since the kitchen is such a large part of my space? Appreciate your opinion and/or suggestions.

The cabinets are very pretty, so I would not paint them all. I would paint the two wood columns and the island. That would make a big difference in how light the room feels.

Also consider placing a large light colored area rug under the table and chairs to break up the dark flooring. You could also paint the stair railing white like your lower walls. Bring in a large mirror to reflect more light around the space.

Leggo solo oggi questo post, dall'inizio alla fine e devo dire molto utile e pure emozionante. Negli ultimi anni, mi sono avvicinata molto al tema del riuso creativo, nell'acquisto di mobili ed oggetti di seconda mano e mi sono accorta che il gusto che provo nel risultato finale è qualcosa in più dell'aver risparmiato o di averlo potuto fare altrimenti nulla. E' la capacità di vedere qualcosa che altri non vedono (all'inizio), ma poi si ricredono; è mettere in pratica quei valori culturali in cui sono cresciuta (la parsimonia, la prudenza, il riuso, l'attenzione per l'ambiente, ecc). Ed ho capito che questa operazione ha anche un significato "spirituale": dare una seconda vita alle cose, migliorandole (o nobilitandole). Per questo mi ha emozionato questo post perché ho rivisto in quella cucina una similitudine con la tua storia: la tua seconda vita, rivista, reinventata, una nuova opportunità che stai dando a te stesso, senz'altro più consapevole dei tuoi pregi, ma anche dei tuoi difetti, proprio come quella cucina che "di pancia" hai scelto nonostante tutti contro! Bravo! Mi complimento con la tua coerenza e ti ringrazio perché ricordi a "noi" esteti del mestiere che mai ci dobbiamo dimenticare che a volte il meglio è nemico del bene. Viva la semplicità! Sono d'accordo con i colleghi, anche se credo che già con le piccole modifiche che pensi di attuare e con il suo riposizionamento in altro ambiente, otterrai già un risultato più che soddisfacente.

Colorare i mobili per ora è fuori discussione, sebbene la mia Snaidero abbia 17 anni è in perfette condizioni. Ho fatto la scelta drastica su questi colori appunto per staccarmi dal colore caldo del legno ed in questo modo dargli risalto. Quando l' ho pensato ero abbastanza scettico, sul creare un contrasto cosi forte ed abbandonare il classico, sfruttato e rassicurante tono su tono dei vari bianco, giallino e tortora (i colori che danno sicurezza).....ma nella vita bisogna osare (e se nn mi fosse piaciuto....due rullate e tutto si risolveva). Oggi guardandola mi ritengo molto soddisfatto del risultato. Grazie ancora a tutti per gli apprezzamenti ed i consigli.

io vado spesso da IKEA a Padova avendo la passione di case, arredi, architettura (all'acqua di rose perchè solo sentire derivate integrali ed equazioni mi viene male !). Vedo bellissimi ambienti ma guardando bene non c è molta sostanza però sono certa che chi è del mestiere es :un mobiliere, un architetto che conosce falegnami fabbri ecc riesce con fantasia, buon gusto e competenza a realizzare validi progetti! Purtroppo ci vado io che non sono falegname, che ho tempo limitato, che sto a casa a guardare Houzz perche sono reperibile e da li non mi posso muovere sta tranquilla che vado acquistare il bel ciaraffo che dura da Natale a Capodanno ! La cucina poi per carità io che di attacchi non ne capisco magari scelgo il modello bello ma con le misure sbagliate e allora dove sta il risparmio ? A proposito il letto Hemnes matrimoiale è valido quello lo vorrei per una seconda casa che ne dite ?BUON ANNO A TUTTI scusate la pappardella!

I actually pulled out that white paneling. It was odd and way too high. And got a glass table instead of that dark one that the previous owner had. I like the idea of painting the columns and island and stair well. White or antique white? Change the back splash out? It's silver which seems contemporary for the shaker cabinets. I guess there's no way to break up the floor and the cabinets. I just loathe the red...and this is my only living area.

I would consider removing the wood paneling on the columns and drywall them They seem obtrusive as is. Or, as ritting28 suggested, paint them; either white or a colour close to the wall.

I would paint those columns the same color as the walls.

Agree, the kitchen cabinets keep. Paint Island and columns. Is that your kitchen, table and chairs - you could paint those white also and reupholster chairs.

I have the same situation, beautiful cherry shaker cabinets, and a wood floor in my new house. I'm a white kitchen person, and thought I would paint these but they are starting to grow on me. I'm going to paint just my island a cream or other color to break up all the wood. I agree with other posters, start with your island and see if you even like the way the wood looks painted before you do the whole kitchen.

Paint the columns on the living room side leave wood on kitchen side.

What you've done looks nice. I think I would paint the ceiling the same color as the walls.

The columns really stick out. Is there any way they can be removed? It would open up your space tremendously.

You mentioned breaking up the space and the darkness which makes sense. The table and chairs break it up nicely, but they are a dark light absorbing color which seems to go against your goal.
Have you considered light colored (light gray maybe or ecru) runners along the cabinets? I really like the suggestion to paint the island and columns and stair railing.

A completely different alternative would be to use a light stain and weather the floors.

White wash the cabinets so you retain the wood grain but lighten. The cabinets, columns, island, and wood floors are too much of the same color.
