Another option is repurposing a closet as a home office. The easiest approach is to remove the closet’s doors and add a desk, file cabinets and shelving. You might also consider installing bifold doors that you can close at the end of the day to hide your office, which can help you separate your professional life from your personal one. If your budget allows, consider researching companies that build custom closet systems. Many provide solutions that include built-in desks, file cabinets, drawers and shelving. These companies might be able to coordinate with an electrician to install electrical outlets and lighting. The design can be tailored to fit your needs and the size of your closet. A professional home organizer can help you create your perfect workspace. A good organizer can inventory your belongings, assess your working style and advise the closet designer on how to best lay out the space to fit the way you work.

This dog spa and laundry room from Wellborn Cabinet puts man’s best friend at the center of the design. The multifunctional space spotlights contemporary styling implemented throughout with recessed panels, simple tiling and sleek hardware. The design includes space for the family pet to sleep, eat and be bathed, with a mid-tone gray color palette to hide dirt and hair. Wellborn’s Premier Series was used throughout this design, with the Saybrook door style in Maple in the newly launched Gray Mist with a Granite glaze. The Saybrook door is from Wellborn’s Medium Density Fiberboard Door Collection. Every drawer and door has the soft-close mechanism, and the cabinetry has 5/8” hardwood dovetail joints providing strength and durability. The contemporary gray tones provide a crisp and clean foundation while the green tiling and wall color offer subtle accent colors which enhance the overarching contemporary feel.
The landscape architects at Land Studio C capitalized on the existing slope of this San Francisco backyard to anchor a custom-designed outdoor kitchen equipped with a double grill. The outdoor kitchen layout — combined with bench seating built into the slope — helps maximize space in a long and narrow backyard.
Open wooden shelving units flanking an outdoor grill makes for smart, cost-effective outdoor kitchen storage. In this design by Holly DeGoey for a patio kitchen in Des Moines, Iowa, the designer used metal railings behind the grill and counters to double as hanging racks for copper mugs and kitchen tools.
office sits off the entry vestibule and next to the work den of her husband. The office walls and ceiling are white paneled wood. Exposed reclaimed-oak beams provide some structural support, but they’re mostly decorative. Mennes looked to East Coast farmhouses and Scandinavian style for inspiration. “The office is simple and utilitarian,” she says. Built-ins and organized storage contribute to the clean, functional look. A local builder designed and installed the 12-foot-long floating pine desk. Floating shelves are made from MDF painted to match the room. Plain white binders and boxes store materials and office supplies for the firm. A pegboard wall holds architectural tools, and white filing cabinets offer additional storage. “The idea was to hide everything in the white storage wall,” Mennes says. A leaning ladder with wire trays holds the materials and paperwork for the firm’s current project. The flooring is bleached oak and does not have radiant heating. “We do have a little Panasonic heat and AC unit in the main office. We tend to not need it,” Mennes says. The new shed’s tight envelope and the radiant heating in the other rooms keep the whole space comfortable.
