“It was important to have a large covered area, especially for year-round use. You really need the shade in the summers here,” Fallon says. The porch roof wraps around the corner to protect the main entry, located to the left of the chimney, from rain and snow. That entry faces the main house, which is similar in style to the cabin. Large sliding-glass doors provide a large opening between the main living space and the porch.
Preserving two mature oak trees was the top priority during construction. After consulting with an arborist and the pros at Crown Construction, Strom decided to use helical piers and and a steel frame to support the deck. Also known as screw piles, helical piers are corkscrewed deep into the ground, eliminating the need for excavation; here they minimized the impact on the trees. Because of the depth of these piers and the strength of the steel framing, only seven piers were required — four underneath the porch and three under the deck. The homeowners wanted a shed space beneath the porch for kayaks, gardening tools and their grandchildren’s outdoor toys. The shed portion does not have a built floor, but Strom added a layer of mesh beneath the dirt to help keep critters out. pleasing mix of materials that blend with the natural surroundings. The roof material is cedar shingles, and the ceiling is pre-finished lodgepole pine. Strom used custom copper ridge pieces to avoid the clunky look of hanging cedar ridges. Embracing indoor-outdoor spaces like covered porches and breezeways is another great way to make use of your outdoor furniture throughout the year. Plus, covered breezeways and porches have the benefit of proximity to the home — making it easy to bring out trays of food from the kitchen or anything else from the house. This covered breezeway connecting two areas of a farmhouse home in Sonoma is roomy enough for a large outdoor dining table, offering the homeowners a place to enjoy dinner outside year-round.

Finished in September 2019 after an 18 month build, this residential garden in Richmond features dual level sawn Yorkstone dining terraces with bespoke steps, a 12m wide living wall, and a water future that runs the length of the garden, starting as a natural stream and ending in a Corten steel rill. All of the hard landscaping in this garden is bespoke, specifically tailored for this scheme. The garden is divided in distinct zones; close to the house it is formal in character with crisp clean lines of sawn Yorkstone paving. The lowest terrace includes an Iroko bench with outdoor seat cushions, creating a comfortable lounge area beneath the living wall. Deep Yorkstone steps lead up to a dining terrace and then up again to a lawn with planted boarders. Stepping-stones lead through the lawn to a productive area, screened from view by bespoke louvered timber screens. Individual lights placed between timber fins create a dramatic lighting effect. Lighting is a key part of the garden at night, all of the steps are under-lit and the rill is illuminated with an elegant strip of light. At the rear of the garden a bespoke timber clad outbuilding is situated in a more naturalistic woodland a...
