Classic design sensibility fuses with a touch of Zen in this ASID Award-winning dining room whose range of artisanal customizations beckons the eye to journey across its landscape. Bold horizontal elements reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright blend with expressive celebrations of dark color to reveal a sophisticated and subtle Asian influence. The artful intentionality of blended elements within the space gives rise to a sense of excitement and stillness, curiosity and ease. Commissioned by a discerning Japanese client with a love for the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, we created a uniquely elegant and functional environment that is equally inspiring when viewed from outside the room as when experienced within.e

Boasting views of the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, the Beaux Arts and French Renaissance style building built in 1900 was once home to a luxury hotel. Over the years multiple hotel rooms were combined into the larger apartment residences that exist today. The resulting units, while large in size, lacked the continuity of a single formed space. StudioLAB was presented with the challenge of re-designing the space to fit a modern family’s lifestyle today with the flexibility to adjust as they evolve into their tomorrow. Thus, the existing configuration was completely abandoned with new programmatic elements being relocated in each and every corner of the space. For clients that are big wine connoisseurs, the focal point of entry and circulation lies in a 400 bottle, custom built, blackened steel and glass, temperature controlled wine cabinet. The once enclosed living room was demolished to create one main entertaining space that includes a new dining area and open kitchen. Hafele bi-folding pocket door slides were used in the Living room wall unit to conceal the television, bar and display shelves when not in use. Posing as kitchen cabinetry, a hidden integrated door opens to reveal a guest bedroom with an en suite bathroom. Down the hallway of wide plank ebony stained walnut flooring, a compact powder room was built to house an original Paul Villinski installation of small butterflies cut from recycled aluminum cans, entitled Mistral. Continuing down the hall, and through one of the walnut veneered doors, is the shared kids bedroom where a custom-built bunk bed with integrated storage steps and desk was designed to allow for play space and a reading corner. The kids bathroom across the hall is decorated with custom Lego inspired hand cast concrete tiles and integrated pull-out footstools residing underneath the floating vanity. The master suite features a bio-ethanol fireplace wrapped in blackened steel and integrated into the Tabu veneered built-in. The spacious walk-in closet serves several purposes, which include housing the apartment’s new central HVAC system as well as a sleeping spot for the family’s dog. An integrated URC control system paired with Lutron Radio RA lighting keypads were installed to control the AV, HVAC, lighting and solar shades all by the use of smartphones.

The Zen Theory
Beautiful balcony designed by our team. Perfect place to sit and relax. The client wanted a private balcony sit out for morning discussions. We used engineered wood rafters along with carved sandstone round panels which were backlit. Sofa from Vondom added extra luxury to the entire space.
Color Zen
Living room vignette with a styled console table. White oak floor, blue walls, painting, table lamps and accessories. Mixture of transitional and modern.

Aralia: Innovation in Landscape Design
John Glover
A classical family garden based in Essex surrounding a beautiful Grade 2 Listed property which has been lovingly renovated over the last couple of years.
This sociable family, with busy professional lives, invited Aralia to do a complete overhaul on their rural country garden approaching around 1 acre in total. The country garden was split into several garden sections including: Southern Terrace & Orchard Gardens, Rose Garden (to the front of the property), Zen Garden (central garden courtyard), pedestrian entrance front garden, driveway and further lawned gardens including vegetable garden.
The southern terrace and Orchard Gardens benefitted from a beautiful existing walled garden area which has been enhanced and complemented with many beautiful features including: large 3m outdoor fireplace using natural stone paddle-stones; a row of magnificent Pleached Trees (Ilex quercus), curved natural sandstone sawn paving with setts and borders crammed with a beautiful array of sculptural buxus spheres and herbaceous planting. The Zen garden is an area for quiet contemplation, and includes Acers and Buxus balls, with a real Japanese slant to the planting scheme – offset by a beautiful central metal sculpture. A mature Photinia Red Robin hedge was installed along the new driveway to provide privacy to the Orchard Garden.
Aralia provided a full Landscape Design & Build service, working with a multi-functional team of sub-contractors. They work in extensively in London & The South East (including Hertfordshire & Essex) but work across the Uk & Internationally.

The Zen Theory
The house had a separate family / TV lounge which was beautifully designed for the family members to have some private space to enjoy family time. Since this room was located In the center of two main rooms on the floor it acted as a common area as well.
