Elm Barn Conversion Staircase
Barn conversion in Northumberland; staircase of Elm and forged steel with open treads, forged balustrade and profiled Elm handrail
Our Brief
Our staircase had to physically and aesthetically link the original stone building with a later addition pole barn structure whilst maximising flow of light through the split level property. The clients also wanted the staircase to be a feature from the kitchen and living areas.
Our solution
Chunky treads of English Elm, chosen for its figuring and durability, area supported by amazingly slim stainless steel stringers in the basement kitchen and upper flights, whilst the mid-flight over a storage area where it was not appropriate to have open treads – is of continuous treads and risers
Hand forged and formed uprights, fixed directly into the underside of the handrail, flow gracefully along all flights terminating in feature newels at basement and mezzanine level.
