Sweet Home of MineI changed out the existing kitchen cabinets into a lighter shade as the originals were way too dark for the space making the home seem too dark in this area. The lighting was switched from a large (garage style) lighting to a softer more decorative option and two of the can lights were switched out to add pendant lighting over the peninsula. The flooring was carried through all the way from the foyer, throughout the dining area and into the kitchen to make the rooms feel like one and feel like a larger space. I added seating and storage to the breakfast nook by adding a window seat with built-in storage. Creating more storage space in the home was essential because the original 1960s home had small closets and lacked proper modern storage options. And by adding storage into the kitchen gave an area to add space for some of the larger kitchen items that people have in their homes today. I also took advantage of an open space in the peninsula and made room for a wine cooler. We also increased the area where the refrigerator was located to make the space larger for a more commonly sized refrigerator for today's home owner.

Denise Quade DesignA large kitchen with grey distressed cabinets and warm stained cabinets has so much texture and warmth. A custom wood hood was created on site and add to the rustic appeal. Glass pendants were used over the island. A prep sink was incorporated into the island. The windows all go down to the countertop to maximize the views out the large windows. Transom windows were incorporated on the range wall to let even more light flood in. The granite was run up behind the wolf range to continue the texture.

Specialty Home ImprovementThe homeowner on this busy corner in the diverse and eclectic North Park area was seeking to create additional functional living space while also preserving the existing garage. In an area well known for limited parking and smaller lots, only one direction was really available to make this project a success – UP!
The Challenge: Create a modern, functional living space in keeping with the vibrant character of North Park on top of an existing 90 year old, undersized garage.
The Solution: An efficiently designed one bedroom, one bath ADU with a raked roof and ceiling line to enhance the character of the residence on the exterior while creating an expansive feel of space and light inside.
This project was designed, planned, and built by Sheen Fischer and the Specialty Home Improvement team. We handle our projects from the first phone call through the final inspection.
Matter Design & Make Pty LtdOur client's galley kitchen lacked practical storage with an outdated layout that didn’t flow. They approached Matter to maximise the available storage with a more cohesive layout to suit their evolving needs in the years ahead. They allowed near free reign over design and materials, with one simple request that each are equally contemporary and functional.
Our design solution combines hard-wearing Blackbutt plywood and grey Forescolor MDF for the door and drawer fronts with laminate-face plywood carcasses. As the MDF has a full colour core, we added a new handle design that cut into the face on a taper, enabling a larger finger-pull and play of light on the surface. Solid Blackbutt handles and vertical partitions are a contemporary take on traditional frame and panel doors. For a touch of indulgence, we added beautifully dramatic Faustina quartzite bench tops and splashbacks from Artedomus.
All lower cupboards were replaced with drawers featuring adjustable partitions and a large pull-out Kesseböhmer pantry to ensure food is easily accessed. The oven and microwave were moved next to the stove area and raised for better accessibility. A bench top appliance nook hides away the kettle and toaster behind a custom-made Blackbutt tambour door. We also replaced a section of overhead cupboards with slatted shelving and a mirrored backing that reflects natural light to open up the tight space. Lastly, we added a pull-up bench at the end of the galley to allow our client all the surface area they need to continue to cook meals with complete ease.
