width between horizontal boards?

I believe they are 8 inch boards, correct? How are they installed to get that clean consistent look? When I see painted butt jointed boards they look sloppy. There is space between some and paint between some. I would love to know how you did it. Thanks.

    I spec this detail in many of the houses I design and our trim guys often uses quarters wedged between the boards as they install. It's just the right size gap to keep the paint clean and the gap size completely consistent.

    I do think this gap looks a little bit bigger though... maybe use thicker washers?
