We spent around $13k net (after a partial refund) and 3 months on landscape designs with Keith Willig and his project manager Carmen, before they checked with the county and realized that the central pergola / entertaining area we had designed was not allowed, so we terminated the project. Background: We wanted to redesign/refresh our entire existing yard, augmenting our outdoor kitchen with a permanent shade structure / entertaining area. Given the considerable expected cost for refreshing our landscape, we wanted to create a new outdoor living area with all the bells and whistles. We considered a number of landscape designers, contractors, and architects, and signed our contract with KWLA in early January 2023 based on their strong portfolio and references, although they were on the high end cost-wise. How it progressed: January: We had a kick off meeting, followed up with some emails, and they presented 3 initial sketch proposals of some yard layouts. One only included an umbrella for the outdoor area, so we reiterated we wanted a permanent structure for entertaining. Billed charges just over $8k. February: We had a follow up meeting to discuss what we liked from the proposals, and more detailed discussion about materials / aesthetics. A few weeks later, they provided an updated sketch proposal incorporating what we discussed. Billed charges just over $5k for the month, including 6 hours ($870) for "Permit Submittal/City Codes". March: They prepared CAD layouts of our design, with a couple pages of mulch/stone and plant options. We provided some feedback, and they returned a couple weeks later with initial cost estimates using 2 material options - both were six figures higher than the original budget in our contract. We pushed back, and they provided a revised down that was still higher than the original, but not by six figures. We then had a meeting where they brought some material samples and we finalized layout. The next week, Carmen notified us that she met with the county planner, and that they had not been aware of an accessory structure setback that would rule out any permanent shade / outdoor living structure by the outdoor kitchen. We expressed our frustration to find this out so late, and Keith offered to redesign that yard free of charge. Billed charges just under $5k. April: They provided an estimate for just doing the other area, but we decided it was not worth the remaining costs to proceed without the new area, so we terminated our contract and abandoned the project. When we checked a couple weeks later to confirm our account was cleared, Keith offered to refund us for the payment we had made for March, so we ended up ultimately paying for January and February (~$13k).

We recently worked with Keith Willig Landscape Architecture on full renovation of our front and back landscaping. Keith helped us with all aspects of the project, including design, choice of plants, and construction. We are very pleased with the outcome, and have also received many compliments from others who have seen it. Keith is a good listener and clearly had our satisfaction with the result as the main priority. He did a good job of incorporating existing elements of our landscaping into the new project. Keith is very experienced; he made suggestions at various decision points and we found that where we were undecided and followed his recommendation we consistently felt that this was the better choice. However, where we had preferences of our own he was happy to accommodate them. Once he had a sense of our tastes he presented us with a manageable range of options. We were impressed by the highly professional work that went into the project. Further, Keith's crew has been with him for years; they work well together and are comfortable to be around--something that our neighbors commented on as well. Overall we found Keith to be professional, knowledgeable, flexible, and easy going. We enjoyed working with him and are spending much more time outdoors in our beautiful new environment.

Always a pleasure when you can write a glowingly positive review. We had a project with some very specific parameters - and a small space to work in. Keith immediately understood everything we were trying to achieve, in what time frame and the budget parameters. He internalized it and translated it into designs quickly and expertly. He captured important, sentimental elements, brought nuances to the project that we hadn't considered, etc. His team was a pleasure to work with - we were happy to have them at our house everyday. We were so pleased with his work (as is everyone who comes over) that our next door neighbor used him as well. Our backyard has now become the gathering place for all our friends - we've never used it this much! All and all a fantastic journey!

We had a terrific experience working with Keith Willig and his team for both design and construction services over the course of a year. Our primary project goals were to better utilize various parts of our backyard and enhance our overall landscape to be more modern, streamlined and water tolerant. We added a large trellis over our deck, an outdoor kitchen, a play structure area, a water feature, and a seating area on our porch as well as extended the existing decking and stairs, enhanced the walkways with stone/tile elements, and changed several groups of plantings From design to construction and installation, Keith and his crew were professional, easy to work with, responsive, thorough, and just plain nice. Keith and his team handled everything, from the biggest headaches like securing permits to the smallest challenges like finding just the right shade of paint. Keith follows an orderly process thanks to his experience in the field but not at the expense of making on-the-spot, inspired changes along the way. He was direct about what works and what doesn't not only in terms of function and design but also budget. He wants to make the client happy, takes pride in a job very well done, and doesn't overpromise and under-deliver. Our family has been able to use and enjoy every inch of our yard after making the improvements thanks to Keith and his team. We would work with him again and recommend his services without reservation.

Loved Keith and his whole team. Very personable. No small thing as it it was the first six months of 2020...which was no easy season. Keith did a great job taking my ideas, developing them beyond my ability, walking back things beyond my budget, accommodating my taste, and gently correcting me when my instincts were off. We couldn't be more happy with the result. Highlights are the split level which adds dimension and the puncturing of the solid fence with several sections to expose the creek out back....ideas I wouldn't have thought of. Challenges he met and overcame were a rambunctious Golden Retriever that ultimately required burying and anchoring chicken wire over all of the planting areas and cutting out spaces for individual plants so the dog couldn't dig them up, and, making a custom hutch top for a new vegetable bed so the pandemic-inspired wildlife didn’t destroy my veggies. The project included a gas fire pit and grill, a fountain, accommodating a basketball hoop and a ping pong table, grading, mixed hardscape, irrigation, lighting, and included new trees, shrubs, flowers, and some containers...all drought tolerant. Crew was always on time and very neat.

I have had the pleasure of working with Keith and his team. They are incredibly talented and have an incredible sense of style, color, sustainability and being unique. They are good listeners, responsive and creative. They worked on a new construction project and truly exceeded our expectations. Keith did an outstanding job with our landscape project. I was looking for an all in one landscape architect and contractor. Our house has modern architecture and we wanted the landscaping updated to match the house, as well as building a new deck for us. Keith Willig's team did it all - from design to implementation. We have new lighting, new steps, a new retaining wall, several new patios, and a brand new beautiful deck with built in bbq and jacuzzi that we have enjoyed all summer and look forward to enjoying for many, many years to come. The project was completed professionally and on the time line described to us. Keith and his team handled all the permitting, subcontracting with electricians and plumbers, and other trades people. They also ordered all the new plants, lights and materials for our new sprinkler system and completed the installation. Keith and the team responded promptly (usually within 30 minutes - sometimes less!) to any little question I had by phone, text and email. We couldn't be happier with the result. Our neighbors keep asking us who did the work because it is beautiful and it was done in a timely manner! We really couldn't have asked for more.

When we decided to remodel our ranch style house to a more contemporary home, we knew that the landscape/hardscape would be as integral to the process as the house design itself so finding the right person for the job was very important to us. Our architect recommended Keith Willig. Short version - Keith and his team are very professional, creative, cost-efficient, and a joy to work with in that they made life much easier for us during this process. Details - For the design process, Keith listened to our ideas and requests (even if it meant saving a favorite pomegranate tree by pouring concrete around it for the driveway), he was open to collaborating with other consultants if we asked, and he was able to beautifully tie in a mature garden into a contemporary house. For the build, his crew was highly skilled and reliable. Costs were transparent and we were notified of any changes in advance. At the same time he tried to get us the best deals. He was readily available for onsite meetings even on short notice. There were no surprises, and the start and the finish went as planned. We trust him implicitly and as a bonus he was fun to work with. We would hire him again without reservation.

What my husband and I wanted when we hired Keith Willig was his thoughtful, contemporary, sophisticated yet whimsical design esthetic. What we got was so much more. My son and his fiance decided in the last minute to have their wedding reception at our home, in the backyard, which was a total wreck. Her entire family was coming from Germany and we wanted something beautiful and unexpected , something that shouted, "your daughter is marrying into a highly creative, fabulous family!" I also needed it done in 4 weeks. And it was done in 4 weeks and it was spectacular. In addition to Keith's incredible design, we got a level of professionalism we had never experienced before. He was on site everyday. His team was experienced, reliable, hardworking and friendly. Our budget was respected and our time frame met. Keith was collaborative, but knew when it was time to talk us off the cliff. The wedding was perfect and we now have a jaw dropping front and backyard.

Keith and his team are incredibly transparent and professional. There were no surprises financially. They work quickly and efficiently. The result is better than I could have ever imagined. Keith Willig and his amazing team created a truly fabulous landscape design and then executed it to perfection. The whole process has been exceptional (and we all know that it can be very trying when dealing with any type of construction and design with our homes). Keith and Helen worked with our family to come up with a landscape plan that fit our budget and fulfilled our dreams. They did a really great job of taking our input yet elevating our ideas into something spectacular. He really gets functional design--what's beautiful and works. He maximized our budget rather than skimping or cutting corners. Finally, his construction, landscape team is great. They work extremely hard and are very kind and thoughtful to their clients (my family). This has been as good an experience as you can imagine...and then better. I am grateful to them.

Keith is awesome!! He's done two landscape jobs for us...a major overhaul initially, then some cleanup work after our house remodel. He is knowledgable about design aesthetic and all manner of plants, trees, vegetation. He's super responsive and has a calming demeanor that helps soothe the chaos of major remodel projects.

After doing a major, modern remodel on an original ranch house, we were left with a few tired old plants and “brown-is-the-new-green” front and back yards. So, we hired Keith Willig, who did a complete overhaul of our property, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results! We’re talking new hardscaping, Ipe deck, fencing, irrigation system, lights, no mow lawn, plants…the works. He is one of the few landscape architects who also does installations. This turned out to be a huge plus. At the end of the design phase, we got a complete set of plans. We shopped the design around with other contractors/installers, and Keith's quote ended up being competitive. Overall, the project progressed smoothly and was finished close to the estimated timeframe despite having to work around a number of (much needed) rainy days. Keith’s crew was really outstanding…they were courteous, respectful, and as tidy as possible under the circumstances. The crew’s lead kept me well informed of progress and upcoming decisions. And, Keith was always available to answer questions or help guide me, as needed. We inevitably had a few change requests which were handled with good deal of flexibility and fairness. All and all, we’ve been very satisfied with the outcome and are already enjoying the wonderful outdoors Keith created for our family.

Keith designed and built a beautiful, modern landscape for our family. After removing a swimming pool, we did an extensive renovation with Keith that touched on just about every part of our property. The work included new concrete patios, stone walkways, modern vegetable boxes, gas fire pit, tree swing with play area platforms, fountain, and modern plantings. Keith has an excellent design aesthetic and expertise in construction. He also listens well, is intelligent, easy and fun to work with, and professional. He really understood our needs and what we were after. We were happy to hire someone that communicated so well throughout the project by email and in person. Keith is extremely responsive to questions and comments along the way. He is willing to make changes as needed, and to incorporate our ideas (like designing a front gate, switching material for a pathway, and tweaking the plantings). Keith’s crew is hardworking, courteous, and took excellent care of our property throughout the job. Our yard was kept clean and tidy, and safe for our kids to play while the work was being done. Keith Willig is trustworthy and wanted to “make it right” and to make us happy with the final outcome. With his expertise and talent, we were able to create a great outdoor space for our family -- one we love that’s sophisticated, functional and beautiful. Super happy. Highly recommend.

Keith designed and installed a drought-resistant landscape for our Menlo Park home - front and back. In short, we give Keith and his team our enthusiastic endorsement and recommendation. The installation called for constructing stone "porches" at three entrances and updating the irrigation and lighting systems (including locating and repairing a pre-existing leak at no cost to us). The installation also required repairing substantial portions of the pre-existing hardscape in the back patio and driveway. Keith and his crew were consistently prompt, polite and professional. The crew started the project on the day Keith had promised to start it and stayed with it conscientiously until it was completed. We are delighted with the process and the outcome and have already received numerous compliments on the landscaping. Five stars may not be enough.

Keith Willig has designed both our front and back yards -- I recommend him highly. He is extremely knowledgeable and talented. Having done many home remodeling projects over the years, I have had a lot of experience working with various designers and contractors. Keith is right there on top of my list of most favorite people to work with. For both our front and back yards, we presented him with the particular challenge of wanting him to keep parts of the preexisting landscaping. It would have been much easier to demo the entire piece of land and start with a blank slate. However, he understood and respected our decision and worked with us to transform our mundane yard into what I now believe is a beautiful, serene oasis, incorporating all of the features we desired -- and staying within the budget we set. He listens to what his clients want, yet knows when to say no. As the expert, he simply has more knowledge about what will work and what will not. For our front yard, we chose to just use his design services; we tried to coordinate the installation ourselves. That was a big mistake and not worth the savings. For our back yard, which was completed in May of this year, we hired Keith to do it all - design, demo and installation. While not cheap, it was worth every penny. Keith has an excellent crew of extremely hard working, conscientious men; they know what they are doing and he supervises them every step along the way to ensure that the job gets done exactly as he envisioned it. He met his deadlines, was always available for our questions and suggestions, and his enthusiasm and expertise were always evident.

Keith WIllig is fantastic. He has a creative mind for design, strict standards for work quality, and stands behind his work. He worked with us on the landscaping design and execution around our new home and we have been very pleased with the results. He offered up ideas, came up with the final design and helped us select materials and plants and then made it happen! He was open to our feedback along the way and made adjustments with ease. He was able to incorporate some lovely color with low-water plants and succulents and created some amazing areas around some mature redwoods we have with shade-loving plants. Keith continues to work with us, keeping our landscaping up to date and offering up new ideas to incorporate. He is very responsible, letting us know when things need to be fixed and taking care of existing plants. I will definitely use Keith should we have any future projects. Keith has my utmost trust and I can't recommend him enough.

After interviewing several landscape architects in our area we chose Keith to do our landscape design. We had a fairly firm budget and a lot to cover. He was able to creatively and thoughtfully, help us decide how best to spend those dollars for the most impact. We are now at the finish line and our outdoor space has been completely transformed. Our favorite feature is a solution surrounding our heritage Magnolia tree. He found an inspired (from one of his museum visits) solution that has incredible impact and has become a focal point for us to enjoy. I highly recommend him for your landscape design.

We worked with Keith this last winter to redo essentially all of the yard space for our suburban home. This included front (yard, walkways, driveway), back (yard, patio), sides (planter boxes, walkways). We're very happy with not just the results, but the experience of working with Keith. Our house is an Eichler, so we were looking for a modern aesthetic in the design phase. Both Keith and designer Charlie Loy worked on preliminary design iterations. We worked with Keith directly as the design finalized, through the inevitable tradeoffs between features & budget. Through the build process, Keith was creative, flexible, and unflappable in making design and build adjustments due to complications (tree overhang required fire put to move, which meant the layout of some key benches and walls had to move, Keith worked out a new design immediately) and opportunities (turning some reclaimed boulders and river rocks into a water-less water feature). Budget and schedule: Our budget was around $100K, and we were able to stick pretty close to it, by changing some design elements so that the final design was at budget. Once we were in the build phase, both budget and schedule went without a hitch. Of course there were delays, but Keith and Cesar, his foreman, kept us informed, and worked around delays (inspections, parts not showing up) as much as they could. The whole crew was professional and thoughtful throughout the process -remember when we had those big storms in Nov /Dec - they made sure that even tho the yard was a muddy mess, we had clear access to the house. In the end, we're very very happy, and I would whole-heartedly recommend Keith Willig. Our new landscaping is not only beautiful, its 10X more usable! Keith & co were able to unlock parts of the property that we didn't even think about, and make them great.
