“Erling Hope was general contractor, cabinet maker, and co- designer for our gut kitchen renovation ten years ago. It has survived ten years of daily use and teenage gatherings and keeps getting better. Everyone wants to linger there. The kitchen is light, warm, and full of beauty and subtle poetry. The space was small- 230 square feet- and we were making it functionally smaller by replacing a wall of storage and appliances with a wall of windows. I thought the job would be mostly a practical puzzle of difficult logistics. It was – yet ended up working brilliantly: easier to move around in and use than when we had more wall space. And thanks to Erling’s design imagination, extraordinary craftsmanship, attention to detail and materials, it is also a delight to be in. All this and within budget too! So many visitors ask: “Who did your kitchen?”.”

“Two things mark Jim's work. Impeccable workmanship and remarkable taste. We have given him four projects, none of which were of simple design and construction, and the result has always been several steps beyond the original concept. His ability to understand the scope of the piece, and the need, and then take it to another level is, to me who knows something about craftsmanship, his gift. We only had to wait a few weeks for completion on one piece, and he never came in over budget. Jim completed four pieces for us, the first of which began in 1995. His work was such that we installed three more of Jim's creations in our house and, when we buy the brownstone this fall we will return to Jim's drawing board for help”
