Matt comes from a hands on background and is really enthusiastic about all aspects of home remodeling. Growing up in Petaluma, he got to do some hands on activities working in the yard, mowing an acre of grass and chopping firewood every winter. His father was involved in sheet metal work and also was a part of the Boiler Makers Union in San Francisco. Later at UC Santa Barbara’s Mechanical engineering program, Matt found real enjoyment when he got a part time job working for the ME department and got to use the tools! Another source of fun was designing and building projects for his classes, like a mini formula-1 race care, Baja buggy and an amphibious go cart. After college, Matt entered the semiconductor field for a few years, before being a casualty of the dot com bubble. That turned out to be one of the best things that happened, because 2 years later he was introduced to construction. A fast learner, he quickly excelled in the carpentry trade, working for a general contractor during the day, and moonlighting at night and the weekends on his own projects. Four years later he was approached by his first boss and offered a partnership in a small residential remodel company, where he would spend the next four years learning more about projects, working with SF Department of Buildings and Inspections and most importantly client relationships and communication. Now, he is on his own and happy to be working in such a beautiful city. He is always giving his best and expects high craftsmanship from his competent team of subcontractors and vast variety of vendors here in San Francisco. Building these days is a science and has become a system. No longer can we depend on old growth redwoods to last for 80 years, the products and technology that is available for todays homes is much more complex and needs to be approached with the whole house in mind. Whether it is the use of appropriately chosen Simpson structural connectors, deck spacers, recycled blue jean insulation or Green glue and double sheet rock for sound insulation, Matt is always searching for the best products for his clients’ homes. As soon as we completed our first phone conversation with Matt, we knew he was the contractor for us. It was obvious that he is a thorough and serious professional. Every step of the project was thoughtful and very well executed. When discoveries were found that required changes to the scope of the project (replacement of sewer lines, moving pipes, raising a header, etc.), Matt went over all options. He always made sure my wife and I were certain and fully on board before he would proceed. This was true for every build decision. Matt gave us his complete attention throughout our 6-month process. The few times he had to be away from the project did not slow things down. Matt has a great passion for what he does and doesn’t miss a detail. If you're looking for a contractor who is honest, detailed, friendly, smart, and a master at his craft, you're looking for Matt Sanford. We couldn't be happier with the quality and design of our beautiful new apartment, and with the process itself. We highly recommend Matt Sanford Homes.

Ceramic Tile Design

We've been fortunate enough to work with Matt on a few projects and hope to continue to work with him going forward. He has always been an excellent liaison between us and the client in making sure that their vision is turned into a reality. This is especially true on complicated designs where all the details have to come together perfectly for everything to work out. I could not recommend him any more for your project.

We found Matt Sanford Homes via a neighbors recommendation on Nextdoor.com. We had been looking for people that specialized, or have done several garage/basement conversions in Doelger(Sunset houses) construction. We were looking to add a bedroom, bathroom, and laundry area in this area which had largely been untouched. After talking with a few contractors we choose Matt and couldn't of been happier. He did an excellent job preparing us for what was likely to be involved, and indicated areas he thought there could be changes. He recommended an architect to us who prepared drawings for the city, and got us through the permitting process. This was great since we we're particularly experienced in these processes, and they got us through it. As we began construction, Matt worked very hard to keep channels of communication open with us. Several major issues came up over the during the construction, which required changes to the scope of work. He gave us options as to how we can proceed, costs, and what his recommendation was. In almost every case we went with his recommendation, since it was either the best design recommendation, or provided the best long-term value. The quality of the work was exceptional. Everyone who has gone through a renovation has commented on it. The subcontractors he works with are wonderful, and delivered as expected. I would fully recommend Matt Sanford for any home improvement project.

Matt has been our GC on a couple of different projects. We own an Edwardian built in the late 1800's and we developed some leaks during storms and we couldn't locate the sources. Matt was diligent in puzzling through it and eliminating the root causes before finishing and sealing things back up. He cares about resolving issues and is in frequent contact to share his findings and make recommendations. He recently helped us remedy all the issues we needed to address for converting the building from TIC's to Condos. Same good attention to details and worked to make sure we passed our final inspection.

Matt did an excellent job with our two unit building in San Francisco. In one unit he removed a wall and demolished the kitchen in a very orderly and quick fashion. His communication was very strong in that he keep all parties informed and acted quickly on our request for changes and addressing concerns. Th building is 120 years old and required several change orders due to discoveries of issues during rebuild. He kept the additional change orders and the remodel/rebuild on schedule for delivery in his two month completion. He probably coordinated about 10 different subs with varying skill sets without an issue that we were ever aware of. He worked well with the Architect and completed all building inspection paperwork and approvals. He was also good with neighbors when we discovered issues that required working over our property line and on neighboring buildings. I was really impressed by his engineering background and how well constructed the new walls, stairwell and headers above windows were installed and reinforced. His attention to detail of the completed rebuild such as floor, window trim, many openings were completed with impressive precision. I also like that he gave us a weekly projection of how things might impact the residence of both units so we could interact to make sure were all in agreement with any disruption of power, water, access, etc. I also like how he presented issues and his methods of repair for the necessary scope of work. He gave us choice of fixes with issues and a variety of cost depending on our choice. I think his pricing was really fair, especially with the quality of his work. This is our third and hopefully last major remodel and Matt was definitely the best by far. His calming demeanor and willingness to finish things thoroughly and quickly made the entire project go very smooth. Thanks again Matt!

My housemate had some remodeling done in his flat upstairs, but Matt and company gutted my kitchen and took out the wall/closet between the living room and kitchen, making the area one large space. Matt Sanford Homes does great work. Matt stayed well within the timeframe he projected and kept us informed about each step and what we had to do next. He also uncovered some problems in this very old house, and repaired them to a "good-as-new" state. The finished project is beautiful, functional and up-to-code. We didn't think we'd enjoy the end result as much as we have. We love our new home.

Matt is a trusted advisor and contractor who makes you feel comfortable asking any possible question regarding scope, design, and safety. We have a really beautiful house that is in good repair despite being more than 100 years old thanks to Matt. Our kitchen is gorgeous and his careful carpentry skills assured us it would be functional as it indeed is. His engineering background ensures that he knows what is safe and secure. It is a delight to work with Matt, he is always on time, responsive, and 100% accountable.

Matt Sanford did a major remodel in our home, which included taking a bedroom down to the studs, moving a bathroom wall, adding a sliding glass door and a window where none previously existed, and much more. He also did work on our deck and in our garage. All told the project was about four months long or so. Matt was always informative, courteous, communicative, on time, knowledgeable, and followed a clear schedule that he created and we could check everyday. He is not one of those contractors who hires subcontractors and then takes off for the day. He does much of the work himself, but if he hires subcontractors, he supervises them closely. We would hire him again and do recommend him to others.

Samantha Schoech

Matt gutted our kitchen, removed a wall and fireplace to connect the kitchen to the living room and dining room. Then he put it all back together. He's totally reliable and a very hard worker. He looks as each project as a problem to be solved and he's very dedicated to his work. He is not a great designer, so don't rely on him too much for aesthetic choices, but he really knows what he's doing when it comes to building, and he's pleasant to work with.
