If Mother Nature had a daughter, she would be Jan Johnsen. Her finest communication is through the senses: sight, smell, sound, touch. This is seen in her book, Heaven is a Garden which highlights 40 years of her best work in Landscape Architecture. Her impressive education in Japan and Hawaii enables her to use her Masters degree to see the potential in a barren plot of land and turn it into a breathtaking sanctuary!

Johnsen Landscapes & Pools designed and installed grass steps for me and also designed and installed foundation plantings around the front and side of my home. Part of this work included the installation of a stone wall. Laura McKillop was a responsive designer who spent a significant amount of time assessing my property and inquiring as to my preferences. Rafael Algorin was also very responsive as he supervised a crew of men who were respectful and talented. I have been very pleased with the services that Johnsen Landscapes has provided, and I plan to continue to work with them.

Jan Johnson is a superb landscape architect. She transformed the woods behind our house from a jungle into a magical place with paths, a waterfall and beautiful plantings. She has a sharp eye for the details of the landscape and how to use them to create something that is pleasing to the eye and nature friendly. I can only praise her talents with the highest regard and would recommend her to anyone who wants to transform their property from the ordinary to the spectacular

I have worked with Jan Johnsen and have come to know her personally. She is one of the most talented individual I’ve met in recent years. Well- traveled, she is sophisticated, intuitive, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the world of plants. She’s a pleasure to be with and easy to talk to. When our landscape was decimated by hurricane Sandy, she turned what had become barren into one of the most joyful part of our home. One can say that “Heaven is a Garden” with Jan at the helm. I could not more enthusiastically recommend a landscape architect.

I have used johnsen landscapes and pools for 20 years for landscape design of many projects on my property. The design concepts have been amazing, we have been thrilled with all of our results. Highly recommend this company to recreate space on your property that will look beautiful.

The project was a full re-vamp of our extremely sloped, backyard, including planning, building, drainage, etc. The plans defined a beautiful garden with site lines considered from both inside and outside of the house. The workmanship was top quality, using the most highly skilled workers and attention to the tiniest details. Beautiful stone walls were built, with practical drainage built into them. A large terrace was created, with a variety of wonderful and practical plants. The garden looks beautiful in every season and the company has made sure that we continue to be happy with the results.

I hired Johnsen Landscapes & Pools to re-landscape part of my back yard. I had it done years ago by a local garden center and was never really happy with it. Once Jan worked her magic I love looking out the window and can't wait to see what the spring brings. She created a beautiful rock garden in a hillside, installed her signature grass steps as well as created a rock bordered garden to define space in the back yard. All the work was done in a timely manner, her workers were polite and really take pride in their work. I whole heartedly recommend Johnsen Landscapes & Pools to anyone who wants to create beautiful outdoor spaces!
