Diego Gutierrez works collaboratively with his clients to understand and bring alive their ultimate architectural vision for living and work spaces. To each of his projects, he brings the principles of sustainable design, green construction and environmental awareness, and the results of his work are found throughout the Berkshires and Great Barrington, Mass., nearby New York state, and Northwestern Connecticut. Born in Bogota, Colombia, he immigrated to New York City at age of nine, attended high school in Manhattan, and graduated in 1987 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, with a Bachelor in Architecture. He worked for various architectural firms in New York until moving to the Berkshires in 2000. Now in his own practice, he works on a wide range of residential and commercial projects in the tri-state area. Diego’s love of architecture extends to education: he teaches children about the art and science of architecture through various design workshops at local schools, libraries and community centers. His workshops have been funded partly through grants from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation and the Boston Foundation for Architecture. He is also on staff at Flying Cloud Institute, a year-round educational arts and sciences camp serving children and teens. Diego lives in Housatonic, Massachusetts, a village in the Town of Great Barrington. He has been a member of various local committees, including the Energy Committee, which was instrumental in gaining state designation for Great Barrington as a “Green Community.” He has been a member of the Steering Committee of Friends of the Great Barrington Libraries, an all volunteer group dedicated to supporting and promoting the libraries in Great Barrington. He is assisting the Parks Committee of Great Barrington in developing a Master Plan for the Housatonic Village Green.

Diego transformed a small 19th centuryBerkshires barn in disrepair into a 21st century poorhouse/guest house. It's such a gem, I've practically abandoned the main house and stay there. He preserved the integrity and feel of the original structure, yet gave it all the modern comforts. A beautiful job!

Diego is creative, capable, honest, hardworking, and thank god, on time. He does what he says he is going to do when he says he can do it. And he stretches when you need him too. I have had the luck of having four different homes over time, all of which I have renovated either extensively or modestly. I have used different architects for the different locations I lived and loved and played within. They were all good, as is Diego, but what he had that set him apart was his ability to listen and co-design with me. He didn't have an inflated ego that interfered with hearing what I saw and what I wanted, what we, my husband and I wanted to create. He has honest genuine pride in his work and in working with others. Having now worked with four architects, I have found the common pitfalls are lack of timeliness, lack of supervising a project, and self centered investment in their view of how the project should look, i.e. their own esthetic gets imposed which interfes with creating what the client wants. Diego is interactive, supervising, timely, time sensitive, honest, and creates with style, foresight and meticulousness.

Diego is a pleasure to work with. He came up with a creative design for a project that had little space to work with, a specific budget and tight time constraints. He always responded quickly to our needs and helped make the project a success. I recommend him highly with no reservations.

Diego was very professional and had great ideas to facilitate our vacation home renovation. He oversaw the total project from selecting a builder to it's completion, and kept us informed of everything along the way. He was a pleasure to work with and would highly recommend him.
