Freund Studio

My wife and I hired Freund Studio to restore and expand a mid-century modern home from 1948 by Gregory Ain in west Los Angeles. We completely restored the exterior and interior and added a new master suite and bathroom. Freund Studio helped us to balance our needs while preserving the integrity of this classic house. The house was post-WWII low cost housing which meant we had rebuild a number of elements like the roof which was under sized and noticeably deflected. Freund Studio was careful not to change the visible details and proportions he strategically found ways to upgrade the quality and utility into this century. Freund Studio’s respect for Gregory Ain’s work and its place in history was evident in our preliminary discussions and throughout the design process. Much later we learned that Dan worked for Donald A. Wexler in Palm Springs a hero of the mid-century movement there. We lived in the house for many years and sold it to relocate to the Malibu where we hired Freund Studio again to transform a dull 1970’s house into a modern house full of light and inventiveness. We highly recommend Freund Studio for their design skills and understanding of modernist Architecture.

Dan (of Freund Studio) provided me with professional architectural plans. His creativity and unique perspective resulted in a beautifully designed home that is the envy of everyone in my neighborhood. I have a continued to work with Dan on other projects with which I am involved. I recommend him because of his great attention to detail. He takes his work very seriously and takes great pride in the artistic integrity of his designs.

Freund Studio was recommend to us, after interviewing Dan we realized he was the one designer who could pull everything together: Architectural design, interior design, custom furniture, great lighting, landscaping, and pool design. We love the inside outside relationships, that emphasize our amazing views, planters that come into the interior, as well as night lighting that connects us to nature and creates a zen like peacefulness. During the day, skylights bring light into the center of the house, and the sun casts beautiful shadow patterns. Our house is a great entertaining space, we still get excited when people want “the tour”. The layout has a great open flow, it’s both spacious and very intimate at the same time. We did not realize how truly special our house design was, but after years of living here, we continue to see the subtle qualities of the place, everyday it still feels refreshingly new.

I hired Freund Studio to design a simple 2nd level deck addition for my Venice Beach house, and got much more than I expected. What they designed is an amazing piece of modern art! My simple house will soon join the "Venice Modernist" collection of cutting edge design that is established here in this funky beach community. Watching our design evolve was a great education for me into the creative process….I’m excited as we will soon be starting construction.

I hired Freund Studio for a very difficult design, their response to my needs was both imaginative and practical. Dan’s ability to integrate Architecture, Design, lighting and amazing art, makes me believe anything is possible. I now live in my “dream” space, which I never thought was possible from where we started. I highly recommend Freund Studio for their inventiveness, also the communication throughout design and construction was very professional. I so look forwards to working with them again.
