Master Bedroom Goes Light and Classic

Before: The previous master bedroom featured dark painted walls and dark wood furniture. “The homeowners wanted their new bedroom to feel lighter, brighter and reflect the history of the house better,” Tsung says.
After: The bedroom is located in a 1920s Mediterranean-style house with well-preserved exterior details. To give the bedroom some of that classic character, Tsung added picture molding to all of the bedroom walls. The picture molding and the ceiling are painted in Super White, and the walls are painted in Gray Lake, both by Benjamin Moore.
The bedroom features a mix of high and low furnishings. “The upholstered bed probably cost less than the custom bedding,” Tsung says. One splurge is the custom wool area rug that features a Greek key pattern. Antique side tables on the sides of the bed have replaced the previous dark wood nightstands.

Before: A corner in the previous bedroom included an armchair and ottoman that the couple had covered with a blanket, because their dog preferred to lie there rather than on the dog bed on the floor.

After: Tsung found a reasonably priced gray settee to replace the armchair and ottoman. “It’s kind of like a glorified dog bed,” the designer says. The low height of the settee keeps the piece just below the windows, maintaining views and providing an easy jump for the dog.
The designer added new Roman shades made out of pinstriped linen to all of the windows. The assorted plants and flowers are a final touch that Tsung likes to add to all of her design projects. “It’s important to add some greenery and life to a room,” she says.

Designer Darcy Tsung says that her clients had initially looked into an addition for their San Francisco home to create a new master bedroom and en suite bath, but after receiving estimates of nearly $300,000 from architecture firms, they reached out to Tsung to see if they could renovate their existing master bedroom without breaking the bank. “One of their biggest needs was more closet space,” the designer says. “Once they saw the mock-up of the new built-ins along the bedroom wall, they were excited about the renovation.”
Tsung devised floor-to-ceiling storage along the wall separating the bedroom from the bathroom. The built-ins are used by the husband to store all of his clothes and accessories, while an existing walk-in closet inside the bathroom, previously shared by the couple, is now used by just the wife.
