Fabulous Fireplaces Heat Up the Modern Home
Set your living room aglow with these 8 sleek but inviting designs
Forget the wintery weather and get cozy! We're big fans of sleek and chic modern design (think clean lines and unexpected touches). But just because a space is modern doesn't mean it can't be warm and inviting.
These eight rooms are grounded by a fabulous fireplace design. A fireplace adds warmth to a space and creates an ideal place for gathering and entertaining. Plus, it acts as a focal point for the room. Create comfortable seating areas that face the fireplace to make the most of the room. Most of these designs are custom, but many of the ideas can be easily adapted for any home, at any price point.

Work with what you have. This space was designed by the incredible Antonio Martins as a part of a remodel. Rather than deal with an expensive, time-consuming demolition, Martins commissioned Scott Adkins of Redwood City, California's Profab Metal Design. Adkins situated a new steel fireplace surround over the brick hearth, which helped save time and money.

A gray and purple color scheme and bold but sleek design elements, such as the large concrete fireplace, make this room elegant and comfortable. The fireplace also serves as a room divider.

A sizable fireplace is given balance thanks to a large, graphic print by Polly Apfelbaum. The minimalist additions to the mantel add a fabulous pop of color.
To get the look for less in your home, try covering a large, inexpensive canvas in a bold textile to mimic the pricey print seen here. Keep the other accessories simple.

This statement-making fireplace was custom designed and fabricated by Concretework's Mark Rogero. The steel-and-concrete fireplace reflects light from the 36 hanging Bocci pendants in the neighboring dining room, and the flickering glow from the fire provides warm illumination.
Let the fireplace create ambiance. Install inexpensive dimmers to overhead lights. When the fire is lit, dim the lights to let the room glow.

This space was a collaboration between California designer Erin Martin and SB Architects. A large fireplace creates an inviting space to sit back and relax.
If you select a large fireplace surround, incorporate other pieces that also have weight but are simple and can balance the attention-grabbing element.

We adore this home, designed by Berkeley, California, architect David Wilson. This custom fireplace, like so many of our favorites, was made by Concreteworks, a fabrication and design firm in Oakland, California. The rustic sensibility of the hearth balances the more streamlined elements throughout the rest of the open living space.
Sometimes all you need to transform a space is a fresh coat of white paint. Designer Melissa Palazzo of the Newport Beach design firm PAL + SMITH is known for her stellar use of color. By painting the fireplace surround a bright white, she kept the space feeling bright and cheerful but not overwhelming.
