Before and After: Bathroom Keeps Layout but Gets a Whole New Look
See how a designer turns a master bathroom into a luxurious retreat for a couple in Georgia

After: The remodeled bathroom has the same functional features, just new and improved versions. These features include a freestanding tub, glass-walled shower and double vanity with more storage.
Layout: The basic layout of the room didn’t change during the remodeling process. Kandrac kept the vanity along the left wall but extended it to give the couple more space. The corner tub was replaced with a freestanding tub. Kandrac says that, although the tub switch required some plumbing work, the contractor didn’t have any issue moving the fixtures around to the corner of the room. The new glass-walled shower and toilet sit around the corner on the right.
Tub: The freestanding tub took up less space, giving the couple more room for a larger vanity. It also gives the room a contemporary and spa-like feel, Kandrac says.
Window: “The existing stained-glass window was beautiful,” Kandrac says. “There was no reason to change it.” It also lets in a lot of light and provides privacy.
Flooring: The previous tile floor was replaced with marble tiles in a basket-weave pattern.

After: The new shower covers the same footprint but in an entirely new style.
Shower tiles: The shower walls are covered mostly in 12-by-24-inch tiles. In the back corner of the shower, the design team added glass matchstick tiles that run vertically to give the appearance of running water, Kandrac says.
Shower heads: There is an oversize rain shower head and a handheld sprayer.
Shower floor: The remodeled shower has a flat pebble floor.

After: New custom cabinetry gives the couple more storage, especially in the tall cabinet that stretches up the wall.
Cabinetry: The custom cabinets are made of cherry and finished with a low-sheen stain. The tall cabinet along the side of the vanity gives the couple storage space for towels. It also contains an outlet, which is handy for plugging in a hair dryer or an electric shaver, Kandrac says.
Pro tip: When picking cabinets for the bathroom, don’t feel compelled to go with a “traditional bathroom look,” such as white or gray cabinets, Kandrac says. Look at all kinds of cabinets and choose what you like.
Sinks: The design team replaced the vanity top and included rectangular sinks. The change from oval to rectangular gives the area a sleeker feel, Kandrac says.
