Maximize prep space on an island. I love symmetry, and for years, I would center the sink in the island. But unless the island was 9 feet long, the prep area on both sides of the sink was limited. These days, I hold the sink to one side of the island to allow for maximum prep space. Another consideration when placing a sink in an island is the height of the faucet. The taller the faucet, the more of a focal point it becomes.
Leak mitigation in build - It's relatively easy to install a water alarm shut off plus a pan that will protect against any kind of leak by automatically shutting off the water supply as well as containing any water in the pan. I am having this done for my dishwasher, refrigerator, HVAC unit (which is in my ceiling with a central water line) as well as my washer/dryer units.
All of it - all the outlets, lights and charging drawer - popup outlets, yes.
Troyer sourced these tiles from Heath Ceramics. He used a palette of wood, white and blue throughout the property, both indoors and out. With his cabinetry design, he aimed to maintain a midcentury modern vibe with streamlined profiles and hardware. But we want recessed with well placed towel racks and magnets for knives.
Look at the ceiling and lights and maybe backsplash. “Unfortunately, a 1980s kitchen renovation was unsuccessful. It had a low dropped ceiling, can lights, white laminate cabinets, white appliances and a terra-cotta tile floor,” Troyer says. “It didn’t go with anything else in the house and it felt cramped.” This room required the biggest intervention: Troyer not only got rid of the dropped ceiling and the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining area, but he had to adjust the roofline to keep the vault in line with the rest of the house. The ceiling is new. He also patched in new parquet flooring to match the original floors.

Consider Prep Tool Storage Since prep sinks function for before-meal preparation, you want to include shallow drawers nearby for your tools: knives, peelers, whisks, spoons, measuring cups and all your favorite gadgets. Small appliances like your food processor or rice cooker, mixing bowls, colanders and salad spinners can be stored in deeper drawers or rollouts underneath. This is the oceanfront real estate in your kitchen — make sure that everything stored here gets used frequently. If the potato masher comes out only at Thanksgiving, put it somewhere else.

Schulberg Demkiw Architects We as an Architectural practice do what we call a Reverse Design brief for our clients. This helps the client understand what we have heard tell us in our initial discussions. It sets out a clear picture of the projects' direction and the clients needs as we have understood them and because it is in writing it is not misinterpreted.
Indirect light with lots of windows to soak in jungle - open onto deck with push through door from kitchen to deck.
Pantry wall. To address any shortfall of storage created by choosing windows over wall cabinets, I plan to add a large floor-to-ceiling pantry wall. This will keep the bulk of the kitchen storage confined to one area in the kitchen, making it more efficient to find and grab what’s needed. Tip: Put a bank of floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets on an interior wall, since you can’t have windows there.
Drawers instead of doors. Given the choice I will always choose drawers over doors on my base cabinets. It’s so much easier to organize and find things when you can pull out a drawer instead of having to squat down to dig around deep inside the cabinet. Tip: Extra-deep drawers are great for storing dishes, pots and pans. I also try to fit as many wide (36-inch) cabinets in as I can, because these can hold all manner of items yet still be within easy reach.
Ample work aisles. Let me start off by saying that my husband and I both love to cook, so this will not be merely a “show” kitchen. Sure, I want it to look good, but it also has to function well. We also entertain frequently and, as anyone who hosts parties knows, guests always end up huddled in the kitchen. So for these reasons, an open kitchen with generously spaced aisles is very important to us. Tip: The minimum recommended kitchen aisle width is 42 inches. More comfortable, and the minimum I tend to design to, is 48 inches. If you live in a multicook household, I recommend upping that to 52 or 54 inches. The extra space really eases tight spots, especially around the sink and major appliances. But bigger isn’t always better. I wouldn’t want to go wider than 54 inches, because then your kitchen can become inefficient — you’ll spend more time walking than cooking.

Like the colors - less red/yellow and more gray-blue with stained/milk washed cabinetry - not a yellow cast pickle. No to builtin fridge freestanding for access to condenser coils. Plumb for a second dishwasher but put a panel in front until the right dishwasher good enough to have two is located. 2019 models may have improved cleaning due to easing of "energy and water efficiency" regulations.
Kitchens can also be considered wet zones due to liquids encountered during food prep and clean up, as well as the presence of your sink and dishwasher. You may feel more comfortable with porcelain in the event your dishwasher or sink leaks. Mudrooms usually bear the brunt of the dirty shoes and feet that enter your home daily. Porcelain is built to withstand exposure to moisture from rain, sleet or snow. You may also prefer porcelain in your laundry room in the event your washer leaks.

After. McCarthy was able to use the same BlueStar stove and hookups by pivoting the stove 90 degrees and fitting it perfectly into the center of the new island. “I really love being able to face my guests while I cook,” she says. Drawers on both sides of the oven hold tools and potholders, while all the open shelving below holds pots and frequently used items. Go to the article to see before and after

Talking about the Bluestar to the right of window pic. Note - will need stove with higher backsplash.
Again note the gas line hookups for the range chosen - esp. Bluestar
*** note the gas line hookup needs to be lower for the range to fit flush!**** Review this before gas line put in.***"We opted for the 6 inch backguard, which I think was a good choice based on my own cleaning/cooking style. We have our gas hookup very close to the floor (< 3 inches which I found out by reading here, thanks gardenweb folks!) and there is no issue pushing the stove all the way back to the wall. Ours might be standing a bit higher than yours. I do wish stove manufacturers were more standard about hookups though!"
LED strip light and electrical outlets underneath cabinets
LED lights are a safe and cost effective way to brighten up your kitchen island, cabinets, or pendants. Illuminating cabinet interiors and the spaces above and below is a great way to perfectly balance opening up the room, task lighting for food prep and cooking, and adding a splash of color. Illuminating the area under cabinets really transforms a room. LED light bars and strips provide ample task lighting for everyday activities and increase the overall illumination in a room. Never has it been easier to achieve this look than now with the various LED light strip kits offered.
Vintage lighting. Pros are reporting more interest in vintage-style fixtures, such as aged copper pendant lights. “There’s a huge focus on lighting right now, especially vintage pieces, which is also considered to be a great art solution,” Simard says.
Dedicated chopping and baking stations. Regular countertop height is fine for those casual weekly meals. But for larger, more involved recipes that require a lot of chopping, rolling or other strenuous maneuvers, a lower countertop is more ideal. That’s why some avid home cooks are gravitating toward dedicated chopping and baking stations that are often a continuation of a larger, standard-height island.
Functional lighting. Designers have been attesting to the importance of good lighting for ages, but with technology ever improving and the kitchen being such a central fixture of the home, people are embracing layered lighting in kitchens in a big way. LED undercabinet lighting and sleek recessed ceiling lights provide an even wash of light over your counters that makes the space feel larger while helping with delicate tasks like chopping. Add a few pendant lights for ambience and you’ve got a great three-point lighting scheme for a kitchen of any decor.
Wood floors. I’ve been encouraging clients to use their wood flooring in both the living areas and the kitchen for years because it gives a home a beautiful sense of consistency. Yes, it is true that a wood floor will not handle major water spills or leaks in the same way as hard tile, but with a little care and upkeep, the beautiful, inviting look (and subtle softness underfoot) is more than worth it, so you can expect this trend to last and last.
Like the range placement - think west wall with windows flanking range and hood.
Single-lever faucets. A great complement to an apron-front sink, or practically any style of sink really, is the beautifully simple single-lever faucet. The simple silhouette of this style of faucet suits a contemporary kitchen but also provides a smart modern counterpoint to traditional elements to achieve a transitional look. Look for models with a subtle pull-down hand spray to get multifunctionality while still preserving the sleek and simple look.
Farmhouse style. Alternatively, another enduring style trend for kitchens is farmhouse or farmhouse-inspired style. Beadboard, soft heritage colors, rustic hardware and lighting, and planks of knotty wood all give a room a lived-in feel, in a less stuffy or fussy way than traditional styles can sometimes feel. The humble beauty of farmhouse kitchens can be a great inspiration for homes of any size or budget, so expect to see more and more of this style in 2018 and beyond.
like the floors - stain wood similarly?
the floor tile is uber nice
Too dar k for our space but oh so cool
Use a frameless glass shower surround. I found that the metal shower frame was one of the biggest grunge-collecting culprits in my bathroom. Stuff would collect between the frame and the glass and was almost impossible to extricate, and a piece of gummy sealant between the glass and the frame would peel off if I tried too hard. Get rid of the frame and all of that grunge is never even born.
