Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn created this compact desk area across from a kitchen she designed in Westchester County, New York. She color-matched the custom paint to Rockport Gray by Benjamin Moore, a peaceful hue befitting a family command center at which the homeowners manage schedules and schoolwork. The desk includes two in-drawer electrical outlets, one for charging phones and the other for a printer.
Stephanie Flemming of Flemming Interiors designed this sophisticated Chicago kitchen with gorgeous two-tone cabinets — Galveston Gray by Benjamin Moore above and rift-cut oak in a custom stain below. At the end of the 30-foot run of cabinets sits this small workstation. A marble backsplash in a herringbone pattern connects the hub to the kitchen.

Flip-up Desk Murphy Bed: Create a workable work surface by swinging the desk top up and unfolding and locking the legs beneath it. When it’s not in use, the desk folds down and is held securely in place. The desk’s Aluminum legs provide a modern aesthetic.

This "den" was quite generous in size and allowed for both a convertable daybed and home office space. We love the unique accents that give this fairly simple space some warmth and personality. The simple floorlamps are ideal when there is limited space. The modern take on the futon allows for casual seating or sleeping when the need arises. Photo:Anthony Cohen EightbyTen Photography

like the desk - could we do with live-edge?
great use of space
To save space, you can also replace the desk lamp with a floor lamp or even a wall-mounted light like a swing-arm plug-in sconce. This frees up 10 to 16 inches of space and lets the light diffuse a little before reaching the desk, to light a wider area more evenly.
love the chair, the rug, and the peaceful feel.
I love the curvy chair that looks comfy, and kind of disappears at the same time. The wood frame under the desk and to the legs is also cool, though - this look would only work with a finished edge. Still - beautiful.
great tiny office space with a view!
Practical solution for a narrow room: n this case, the desk-shelf is chunky, so the wall attachments are concealed. These eliminate the need for legs, allowing the maximum floor space underneath.
love everything - lighting, shelves, desk, chair(s)....
beautiful bookshelves and lighting
Corral chaotic cables. Unruly wires that snake across and down your desk not only get in the way but create visual clutter too. Adding a cable management system to your home office will allow you to regain control over your cords. This picture-perfect work zone features an integrated cable management and power system, which is hidden inside the white oak cabinets below the desk. The computer cords run along the base of the desk into the cupboard, which also houses peripheral devices, keeping the desktop free of distracting, dust-collecting wires.
love the built-ins and simple, clean desk
Great use of space - Even if you’re tight on space, it’s important that you have enough room behind your desk to push your chair out. A minimum of 42 inches (107 centimeters) is ideal. Working with anything less than 42 inches is going to make you feel trapped at your desk.
love being in front of a window and a built-in bookshelf
A sold slab of reclaimed wood makes for a handsome desk, especially when paired with a task lamp and a metal stool.
The area under the stairs provides a cozy office space in this Vancouver home.
This contemporary office in Seattle includes a custom desk built by Contour Woodworks.
With its taxidermy raven, vintage drafting table and assortment of eclectic accessories, this home office is a laboratory of curiosities.
The use of built-ins really comes into its own in the home office. This one makes great use of storage with all those drawers, but there is also a homey touch with the recessed window seating — perfect for a quick afternoon snooze when it all gets to be a bit much.
For a spare room that needs to double efficiently as an office, like this one, a mix of open shelves and sturdy drawer units, all in plain white, are an elegant and effective use of the space. Make sure the shelving is stable enough to hold heavy books and files and that the height of the cabinets is just right for them to fit snugly under the desktop.
love the garage door idea to close up the office at the end of the work day
