Just wanted to check in with everyone and thank you for your advice. The great master suite renovation is (largely) over. The final, finished shower size is roughly 50-1/2" x 37" (to the glass, or 34-1/2" to the curb). It feels just perfect. Enough length to escape the water when shaving (legs, that is), but not so large that the heat escapes. 37" is plenty of elbow room for shampooing, too. With apologies to our amazing architectural firm, who will no doubt have better photos, let me share one here: Thanks again to all of you for the advice. FWIW, the shower head is mounted on glass, here, so that 1/2 wall you see on the right side of the photo is to hide the pipes, but the rest of that wall is glass. I highly recommend it for those with small baths trying to make 'em live large!
