Cooking up a classic This warm and practical space is the envy of any keen cook When Lesley and Neil Maclennan began thinking of upgrading their kitchen, there was one all-important consideration to take into account. Lesley is an enthusiastic cook who loves whipping up a range of culinary delights, so the new space needed to provide everything Lesley needed to indulge her passion. Unfortunately, the previous kitchen in this home fell well short of the MacLennan’s’ needs. Built around the late ‘80s or early ‘90s, the old kitchen was located at the back of the property and tucked away in a corner. It was cramped, dark and completely impractical, with nowhere near enough space for Lesley to spread out and work comfortably. So when the MacLennan’s decided to renovate their house, they wanted a modern and functional kitchen that also had a welcoming atmosphere. Calling on the services of Mark Graham and the professional team at Composit Kitchens, the MacLennan’s were well on their way to their dream kitchen. “From the start of this project we all agreed that Lesley wanted a kitchen she could cook in,” Mark says. “The house is listed as a heritage home, so a lot of the original features had to be kept or replaced like for like.” “I decided to choose the Mida model from the Composit range as it gave us a contemporary kitchen in a white painted finish which went well with the new extension to the house. But we also had a traditional feel and warmth to the kitchen with the introduction of the framed wood veneer drawer and door fronts.” And Lesley is thrilled with the result. There’s ample storage space to house all of her pots, pans and appliances, while the large amount of bench space means whipping up a three course feast is a breeze. The benchtop also incorporates a clever area for work-related tasks, such as browsing the Internet on a laptop. Myriad other inclusions such as illuminated bottom shelves to the wall units add nice touches, while the whole area boasts effortless good looks. This is the first installed Composit Kitchen in New Zealand or Australia, but you can be sure it won’t be the last. Photo credits: Kitchens and Bathroom Quarterly magazine
