We were thrilled to be working again with these long-time clients in Villanova, PA, to create a two-room wine cellar. This entailed renovating an existing part of their basement and adding an additional room. The best part about this project? The second room is accessed through a secret door! We designed the mechanism that opens the secret door:the door is opened by pressing the cork of a certain wine bottle. This 8,000-bottle capacity wine cellar features all redwood custom-built shelving, and redwood, glass top display tables. The first room has a redwood paneled ceiling and porcelain tile floors. The second room's ceiling is made from reclaimed wine barrels and the beams are made from cherry wood. The floors are reclaimed brick laid in a two-over-two pattern. RUDLOFF Custom Builders has won Best of Houzz for Customer Service in 2014, 2015 2016 and 2017. We also were voted Best of Design in 2016, 2017 and 2018, which only 2% of professionals receive. This beautiful, almost mid century looking wine room utilizes a 1 ton fully ducted wine guardian cooling system. Impala just completed this stunning kitchen! The brief was to design a kitchen with warmth and impressive textures to suit the house which spanned over four levels. The design needed to allow for casual eating in the kitchen, ample preparation and storage areas. Utilitarian bench tops were selected for the preparation zones on the island and adjacent to the cooktop. A thick recycled timber slab was installed for the lowered eating zone and a stunning transparent marble for the splashback and display niche. Joinery was manufactured from timber veneer and polyurethane. Critical to the modern, sleek design was that the kitchen had minimum handles. Two handles were used on the larger doors for the fridge and lift-up cabinet which concealed the microwave. To balance the design, decorative timber panels were installed on the ceiling over the island. As storage was also a priority, a walk in pantry was installed which can be accessed at the far left by pushing a timber veneer panel.

This is a fully custom wine cellar built for one of our valued clients. It features a custom wine cabinet with glass display and metal and wood wine racking. Surrounding it are wine lockers. Everything is fully climate controlled using a cellar cooling system. Vinotemp International

Ciò che non manca mai nella casa di un vero amante del vino è una cantina personale, magari allestita in taverna o nel seminterrato. Nelle serate primaverili ed estive, quando il clima si fa più mite, rilassarsi in veranda con un buon bicchiere di vino della propria riserva è un ottimo modo per concludere la giornata. Una cantina deve essere allestita in un modo ben preciso per poter conservare al meglio le bottiglie di vino: non essendo un semplice sgabuzzino o deposito, questa particolare stanza deve essere strutturata in modo da favorire temperatura costante e giusta dose di umidità. Un ambiente troppo umido potrebbe favorire la formazione di muffe sui tappi di sughero; al contrario un ambiente troppo asciutto potrebbe farli seccare e comprometterne la tenuta. Le cantine possono essere inoltre utilizzate per conservare altri tipi di alcolici nonché alimenti come salumi, insaccati e conserve.

Come allestisco e arredo la cantina di casa?

Se deciderai di sfruttare una parte del tuo seminterrato adibendola a cantina, dovrai prima di tutto assicurarti che non ci siano finestre o infiltrazioni di luce. La luce solare è infatti deleteria per il vino in quanto ne altera il sapore ed è altrettanto dannosa per liquori, birre, salumi e insaccati. La luce solare inoltre rischierebbe di compromettere la quantità necessaria di umidità che deve essere assolutamente presente: le pareti devono mantenere il luogo a temperatura costante tra i 12°C e i 18°C, elemento fondamentale per la perfetta maturazione ed affinamento del vino. Le cantine non sono però da intendere come un luogo a sé stante della casa. Sono stanze come le altre e in quanto tali possono essere arredate in modo da renderle un ambiente accogliente e ospitale, dove invitare i propri amici e mostrare loro la cura con cui conservi le tue scorte di vino.

Come scelgo gli scaffali per la mia cantina e quali cantinette frigo acquistare?

Elemento indispensabile per una cantina di un grande appassionato di vini è la scaffalatura, in legno o in metallo, nella quale riporre le bottiglie e le riserve di cibo. Potresti dedicare una parete intera agli scaffali per il vino, oppure, se la stanza che avrai deciso di trasformare in cantina non presenta le condizioni adatte, potresti utilizzare una delle numerose cantinette per vino disponibili sul mercato, piccole dispense climatizzate che ricreano al proprio interno la temperatura adatta alla conservazione delle tue preziose bottiglie. Posiziona le bottiglie su mensole che dovranno essere delle dimensioni adatte a contenere le bottiglie inclinate tendenti ad una posizione orizzontale, in modo che il tappo, a contatto diretto con il vino, rimanga morbido e non si crepi, evitando pericolose infiltrazioni di ossigeno. È importante anche conoscere l’ordine in cui andrai a collocare sugli scaffali i tipi di vino: i vini bianchi andranno nei ripiani inferiori, leggermente più freschi, mentre i vini rossi in quelli superiori a contatto con l’aria più calda. Ricorda inoltre che il vino traspira l’ambiente che lo circonda, non vorrai mai che venisse contaminato da sostante chimiche ed odori troppo forti: evita di sistemarlo accanto a cibi stagionati o su mensole in legno trattate chimicamente.

Come decorare la cantina

Idealmente la cantina che tutti abbiamo in mente ha i mattoni a vista e il soffitto a botte. Non dimenticare però che puoi integrarne lo stile con quello della tua casa. Se vuoi ovviare ai tradizionali pietra e legno, puoi progettarla con vetro e metallo per una soluzione più moderna. Al centro della stanza potrai collocare un vecchio tavolo in legno restaurato e riverniciato, corredato di sgabelli e panche o un paio di botti in legno da utilizzare come piano d’appoggio. Per concludere l’arredo, consigliamo di dotare la tua enoteca privata di una credenza con i bicchieri: calici, flûte e coppe. Non dimenticare di dotare l’angolo degustazione di apribottiglie e decanter: in questo modo avrai tutto l’occorrente per organizzare una piacevole serata con i tuoi ospiti.
