Living room before/after (plus advice required!)

Matt Blake

Photos attached. Apologies for lighting on the new ones - took them on my phone this morning!

Would love to hear thoughts on progress and any ideas for:

1) matching coffee table and sofa side table (current stuff is temporary)

2) curtain fabric

3) any general thoughts on soft furnishings like cushions/ornaments to tie all together

I’ve been overthinking so would really benefit from hearing others views!

Thanks,

Matt

What do you think of this, with a tray on it, as a coffee table?

Depends what do you like, monochrome or colour. If you remove all the pink cards from the shelves, your room is pretty much monochrome. I definitely miss colour where the sofa and picture on the wall, a brighter colour picture would make a huge difference in there.

    Hello!

I'm one of the interior designers here at Bathroom Eleven.

What do you think to bringing the darker blue off the wall and accessorising with the navy then lightening this with a soft blush pink - and finish up with a brass legged glass table to match the mirror?

If you decide to change the rug, let me know and perhaps we can make a suggestion!

P.S. Perhaps also introducing some seat covers / cushions would soften the wood look of the table?

I've also suggested a runner to pull across the blue into this part of the room :)

Here's what I'm thinking (I quite like monochrome rooms and muted colours)

Wondering if cafe style shutters would work. I’d want them up to the same height all around. In combination with floor to ceiling curtains. You could split them up, so there will be curtains hanging in the corners of the bay too.

I quite like the lighter coloured curtains. A silvery grey perhaps, to go with the rug, but it’s difficult to see the colours of the rug in the photos.

Don’t know why I said rug, when I meant walls. Haven’t had coffee yet. That’s my excuse. But I was also thinking about the lighter base colour in the rug. Sorry for being confusing :-D

Thank you all for comments so far - really appreciate you taking the time.

Carolina - I really like the idea of the ottoman with tray but my girlfriend has unfortunately said she is not keen. I really like your idea of the cafe style shutters like in that photo - will definitely look better than what we have at the moment, my only concern would be cost as I believe the floor to length curtains will need to be MTM. The one quote we had so far was £1500. I also really like the idea of a lamp in that corner - think that looks good and will add to just a small side table.

EV - the photo you shared is lovely and I would be open to bringing colour in but that piece of art is a recent purchase and don’t want it to go to waste!

Bathroom Eleven - I like your ideas re: the table and chairs. I think it would make sense to do chair covers or get chairs with fabric on the seats. I also think a brass coffee table could potentially work in the middle, though I think it would need to be a bit bigger and shorter than the one photoshopped in to work.

Carolina - this might be a better photo of rug. This was when we first bought so looks a bit creased but shows the colour better.

    Thank you!

How about this cushion for your sofa

How about this? Just trying things out for you. The top of the round side table is inlaid with stone which makes it a bit more special: https://www.amara.com/products/semi-precious-stone-side-table-black

And another thought: wooden (or fake wood) wide slatted venetian blinds with wide decor tape. They give the same feeling as shutters, but might be less expensive.

Thank you all for the advice! I’ve been looking again at coffee and side tables and have taken the plunge on these from West Elm - http://www.westelm.co.uk/streamline-narrow-side-table-umber-antique-brass-h2437 and http://www.westelm.co.uk/streamline-coffee-table-umber-antique-brass-h2427?fragment=streamline-coffee-table-umber-antique-brass-h2427 . The coffee table is around the same size as the temporary one we have now, and the side table is around the height of the sofa arm which seemed perfect. What do people think - will these work well?

My first impression when looking at the room is firstly it needs some saturated colour and also the colour of the other wooden furniture is throwing things out a little. The stone of the fireplace and the mirror have ochre tones but this is very different to the other furniture which has looks a little violet. Are the dining table and chairs staying too?

Uploading another photo so you can see colour with better lighting. The coffee table is going to be replaced - just ordered the one I linked to above. The dining table will ultimately be replaced (loan from partners parents) but will stay for now.

What would you suggest? I can’t change the colour of the accent wall or units as they are recently painted and fitted.

    Hey Matt,

I'd go dark greys and blush pink accessories - cushions/throw, etc. And then accessorise the table for now. Definitely plants for the coffee table - and candles. And then a vase and flowers, table runner, and some cushions to soften that area.

I think it all works really well, especially the accent wall. I would just add a more saturated version of the same colour, such as a lamp in a strong turquoise for example, on the cupboard in the alcove.

The blue from the rug would be beautiful for curtains too.

Matt, I realise this is an old post, but we are looking for similar cabinets either side of your fireplace place, the one your tv sits on and the one on the opposite side. Where did you get them from?
