Before & After Kitchen in Washington, DC.

Design
by #SarahKahnTurner in Washington, DC.

Living in an open concept, garden level
condo meant that we needed to update the finishes and make this kitchen
functional, but also look more like an extension of the living room. We eliminated the traditional trim on the pantry door and
changed the six-panel door to a slab. The door and baseboard trim was painted
the same color as the surrounding wall, to camouflage them. Instead of cutting
the kitchen off at the pantry door, we created the illusion that it was longer
and larger than before, without adding a single square foot.

While we readily admit to staging spaces before we photograph them, the client contends that his new space is so much more functional he is able to keep it much tidier. He has drawer dividers, pull-out trash and recycling, swivel shelves that rotate out from the base corner cabinet and many more enhancements in the space.

The door to the pantry on the left was replaced with a flat panel door that opens with a "touch-latch" system, you press on the door with your hand it springs forward to open. No handle is required. We tricked the eye a bit by continuing the baseboard and quarter-round trim on the bottom of the door and painting the whole wall, door and trim the same color so the kitchen feels larger.

The only photo -manipulation that we used was in the planning stages with the client when we wanted to show him what the wall would look like once the new door was installed. He loved it in our presentation and, now that it is in place, he loves the illusion it provides.

Please read the description above to learn about how we cleverly disguised the door. A slab with a touch latch opening with baseboard trim--all painted the same color as the wall.

Really, really nice job. That is why we pay professionals, to see what we can't see.

We could not agree more. Hiring professional kitchen and bath designers helps homeowners get the most for their renovation investments. We all know remodeling is expensive, so don't waste your money on a project that does not increase the value of your home.

It looks lovely, but where is the refrigerator and microwave?

  • swedelife
    7 anni fa

Hello, the refrigerator is the tall column on the left of the kitchen next to the drywall. Top fridge, bottom freezer drawers. The microwave is the brown (truffle) unit to the right of the fridge. It is the Miele speed oven, oven and microwave so it works as a second oven, broiler, convection and microwave.

Great job! Really like the lighter ambiance with minimal embellishment and neutral tones.

I see a number of changes that makes the cleaner sleeker space. Not only the hidden pantry door and the paneled refrigerator but also:

    1. The removal of the wall

    2. The removal of a couple of cabinets

    1. The support post taken off the floor and placed on the bar top.

Really opened the space. Looks so nice. Great job.

By the way, how do those upper cabinets open? Do you raise the doors upward? The handles make it appears so.

Very handsome, stylish, and soothing. Excellent use of storage. Not my color palette, but if we all loved the same look, this would be a dull old world. Great job!

Fantastic job! You manage to make a drastic change without changing the original layout of the kitchen. I like how you camouflage the door and baseboard trim with the same color of the wall. What is the color of the wall? Also, how did you increase the size of the kitchen without cutting off the pantry door? I am amazed that you were able to increase the size of the kitchen without adding a single square foot. The new kitchen looks more modern and spacious than before. Amazing transformation on your kitchen!

nice kitchen. I am surprised nobody ask why space on the right was left for that one chair, why not continue cabinets for example add 2 pantry cabinets? I am not sure how hiding door help the whole situation that by extending island you made entrance to pantry extremely tight. I am not professional but was thinking about cleaning that door , it is a reason doors have handles and painted more durable paint.

You know, at first I wasn't sure I liked the transformation. Then I checked the additional pictures you have of the whole living room/kitchen area (click under completed jobs to see the entire area); and I admit I really, really like the new kitchen. What a very nice, clean and sleek new kitchen/LV! Beautifully done!

This looks great! Can you tell me how the pantry door facing was trimmed out/finished and what type of hinges were used? We have bought an older house with the ac unit in a hall closet and I would love to have that type of door on that closet.
