Our back garden makeover

8 anni fa
Ultima modifica:8 anni fa

There is a 15-20m ash in our back yard next to the garage. Nothing would grow underneath except a huge ring of trusty clivias around its trunk. Under its canopy was a dusty wasteland mainly used as dumping ground for garden refuse until we got round to chopping it up to put in the recycle bin.
We decided to build a bamboo screen just behind its trunk, so that we could have a service area for garbage and compost bins etc. out of sight behind the screen and a new little garden in front of the screen.
We decided to transform the front section into a tropical haven using plants that thrive in a temperate climate. The backbone of the garden is little is a semi- circular path that starts at one end of the garage and came back to the the other end of the garage.
Many of the plants came from other parts of the garden where they had outgrown their sites (eg. Three huge birds nests which cluttered the side way and several birds of paradise and a fan palm which became too tall for the veranda). The major purchase in terms of plants was half a dozen Raphis palms to populate the centre bed.
Several points of interest along the way include a miniature staircase to a couple of Shaolin monks holding a bowl, a waterfall and a brass Hindu cow.
A Japanese garden with a Buddha bust and Japanese water feature (shishi odoshi or "deer scarer") separates the tropical secret garden from the rest of the back yard.
Here are some of the photos of the garden, although the maximum of 4 photos allowed per post doesn't permit me to show you more!

Wow! Love the path. Great to hear you were able to use existing plants from your garden - certainly a money saver.

Thank you Cloudpants and Louise! I am still busy making over the rest of my garden for me to relax in my new little corner. Maybe the week after next ... or the week after that!

Wow thank you. And thank you for your helpful and "out of the box" suggestions, Eva! Without your idea of the screen for the service area, this garden may not even have eventuated.

What a transformation, brilliant job, shame we can't see more of it. And it will only improve with time.
