When it comes to redecorating, do you plan ahead and define a budget? Is it possible for you to stick to budget or do you let your inspiration and creativity run free and spend whatever it takes to fulfil your creative vision?

We'd love to hear your experiences in the comments!

I have a maximum budget I find acceptable and work out if it's possible to do first, then do the work and hunt for bargains.

That being said, my budget for my existing overhaul was a rather woolly '£30,000-£40,000' and I'm at £41,000, with about £2,000 to go. But I did go over budget with a boiler for £3,000, so technically I was in budget :)

My biggest issue is buying something, then realising I don't like it and pretty much wasting the money, just like I've done with a set of 10 cheap blinds.

We told our builders our top budget for renovation of our 4 bed bungalow and 3/4 of the way through with major work to be carried out it is double in price. OUCH !!! ON reflection it would have been more prudent to give the builder a lower figure so going over wouldn't be so costly. We have had meetings with the builder throughout the process but somehow the costs are able to be 'lost' when there is major refurbishments going on.

I agree with the last comment. It is much better to start with a low budget, then you can enjoy the Reno and it doesn't matter if you go over.

alant1000 On the basis of my extensive viewing of 'house porn' as my partner calls it, I can say with authority that a £3000 overspend is pretty remarkable. The usual rule of thumb seems to be come up with a budget and schedule that you can afford and then double both :D I just spend money until I run out...but in my defence I do spend a lot of time trying to source the best prices and will do as much work myself as is sensible. As you say it's not a bargain if you later decide you dislike it nor if your DIY efforts are substandard and you end up having to pay someone to put it right!

I'm a single mum in a council house so the notion of employing builders is laughable to me. However, I love a beautiful home so I am doing it room by room: I spend six months over autumn and winter pouring over and sourcing ideas, so I have an overall, detailed plan. Within that I begin to buy 'pocket money' details (a picture frame, an inexpensive cushion) month by month whilst squirrelling away a budget for larger items (and yes, there are months when the kids wonder if there will ever be anything else but baked beans for tea). In the warmer months, I can get down to the big jobs like wallpapering or painting, upcycling or even installing a new piece of furniture (a certain Swedish outlet does very well out of me.) I have lived with kids beds and desks cluttering up the living room for months while I gather everything together for the final 'pulling together'. For a bit of temporary inconvenience, this helps me stick rigidly to a budget but allows flexibility.
