Moving outside. Reed was working in finance when he and a trading partner started discussing a different career path. “I enjoyed finance but didn’t see myself doing it forever,” Reed says. The two already knew they worked well together, so they bought a small lawn-mowing business and worked weekends to get started. Reed made the jump to full-time landscaping in 2006.
Beauty and function. Reed, who is now a licensed general and landscape contractor and also a licensed irrigation specialist, loves that he can spend his time outdoors. He’s also proud of being able to build beautiful spaces that provide all the amenities homeowners are looking for. “We do things that leave an impression and make people happy,” Reed says.
Looking for ways to beautify your outdoor space? Reed shares some ideas below.

1. Make a Statement
Choose a professional who understands how to blend beauty and function for a look that will stand out. “The finished project should add value to your space,” Reed says.
This home in the Peninsula neighborhood of Cornelius was a blank slate with no place to relax or entertain. Reed started with a covered patio that features a standalone fireplace at one end. The fireplace is large enough to add presence to the space while open enough to allow glimpses of the rest of the landscape. The curved arch of western red cedar that sits above the fireplace provides support while softening the otherwise straight lines of the structure. Skylights in the roof let in additional light. A finishing touch is the outdoor kitchen, complete with a kegerator, refrigerator and ice maker.

2. Create a Destination
Draw family and friends outside with an inviting destination. “This curved sunken fire pit and conversation area overlooking the golf course in the Point neighborhood of Mooresville is the perfect spot for gathering,” Reed says.
His design combines traditional materials with modern style, such as travertine on the walls, bench and fire pit paired with the more contemporary look of a checkerboard created by 24-by-24-inch pavers and fescue. “People love this look,” Reed says. Other features include raised platforms that flank the entry to the seating area and provide a landing spot for statement planters. Undermount lights along the capstones of the walls add a gentle glow at night.

3. Play Up Your Pool
Create a sense of cohesion between your pool’s design and the area surrounding it. “The features in the entertaining area reflect the form of the pool,” Reed says of this Charlotte home’s outdoor space.
The semicircular layout of the outdoor kitchen and the curves on the shoulders of the fireplace are a nod to the freeform design of the pool. “We also added arched openings on either side of the fireplace to hold firewood,” Reed says. He finished the patio in patterned bluestone, then added a boulder as a complementary stone element. “It’s a bubbler fountain as well,” Reed says.
