Who: Ernesto Garcia of Ernesto Garcia Interior Design
Where: Phoenix
In his own words: “The spaces in which we live are constantly communicating with us. A comfortable sofa, a beautiful wallcovering, the warmth of wood planks on a floor — they all speak a language that affects our moods and well-being.”
A great interior design combines style with a perspective that’s unique to you. Helping homeowners customize their interiors to create an original look is what interior designer Ernesto Garcia does on a daily basis. “I provide people with a fresh perspective and something different,” he says.

A love of interiors. Garcia has a master’s in architecture from the National University of Tucuman, Argentina, and he began his career as an architect. His focus changed when he quickly found himself running the interior design departments of every firm he joined, first in Argentina and Europe and then in the United States. “So the writing was on the wall and I’ve dedicated myself to interiors ever since,” he says. Garcia adds that the rational architectural training he received heavily influences the way he lays out furnishings and organizes spaces. It also allows him to communicate effectively when working with other architects.
Visualizing a new look. Garcia says the best part of being an interior designer is that he can enhance and embellish the homeowners’ physical environment. “By doing so, I get to improve the quality of their lives,” he says. He starts by listening carefully. He then looks at their home and reconciles their desires for style and function with the architecture. “I sketch out ideas, helping the homeowners visualize the possibilities until something clicks,” he says.

Ready to start transforming your own home? Garcia has some tips below.
1. Seek Out New Approaches
Look for an interior designer who explores all the possibilities for your space. The owners of this Scottsdale waterfront penthouse condo wanted a modern look, especially when it came to their small fireplace, which didn’t work with their style or the contemporary high-rise building. “I sketched out ideas and helped them visualize what the scale and material of the new fireplace should be,” Garcia says.
The result is a striking monolith that grounds the space without overwhelming it. The light marble finish harmonizes with the black-and-white look of the rest of the room. Garcia paid special attention to the veining of the marble. “I installed it so the veining flows from the top to the bottom,” he says.

2. Add Your Input
Share your ideas about everything you like and want. “You should have a rich communication with your designer,” Garcia says.
The owners of this Scottsdale home have an eclectic style and wanted to incorporate objects and features from different periods in their dining room. “The design process was highly collaborative and went through various iterations until we all felt satisfied,” Garcia says. The resulting room blends antique columns from the 1600s with stylized Regency-type chairs and Art Deco inspiration to create an elegant yet relaxing space.

3. Join the Team
Educate yourself about the renovation process. Garcia encourages homeowners to consider themselves part of the team from the start. He says that helps them know what to expect, which in turn helps the remodel go smoothly. “I help prepare them for the challenges,” he says.
Detailed planning and teamwork played a big role in the success of this Phoenix home remodel, especially in the kitchen. “Few design projects are as complex and involved as a kitchen,” Garcia says. He focused on his relationship with the homeowners to ensure they knew what would be happening and to minimize the disruption to their lives. The result is a family home with the elegant and updated look the owners wanted, completed without costly delays or misunderstandings.
