Hursthouse Landscape Architects and Contractors

We have done several landscaping projects with Hursthouse and have nothing but glowing reviews for both the team and the workmanship. We have had hardscaping (installation of stone patio, fire pit, and outdoor living room with built in entertainment center) and landscaping (design and planting of privacy trees/shrubs and entrance way plants and landscape lighting) completed within the last few years. Each project was thoughtfully designed and communicated - with Bob working to do the best given budget and time constraints. The team and project managers work diligently and clean up at the end of each workday. They are courteous and communicate well. The finished projects exceed our expectations each time. I will only use Hursthouse for our outdoor projects. Be warned, this is NOT a low budget operation... so if you are looking to cut corners, this is the not the company you want. However, if you are looking for high quality work that will improve the value of your home and amazing communication and customer service.... do not hesitate to call Bob Hursthouse and his team.

We have used Hursthouse for several projects now. As an architect I am always impressed how they integrate their landscape design into the architectural aspects of the project. They do an excellent job with that, as well as implementing as many sustainable concepts as possible. I always enjoy closely working with them on our projects!

In 1986, we hired Hinsdale Nurseries to landscape around our new home in Wheaton, largely because we loved the ideas offered by their new landscape architect, Bob Hursthouse, who was assigned to work with us. Fast forward to 2023—with Bob now long established in his own business and his original landscape designs still in place at our home—we decided to call Bob for a selective “refresh” on his design as well as to offer options to remove over 200 feet of non-native, invasive buckthorn hedges in our backyard, which were outside the scope of his original design. After a walk through with Bob, we were presented with a wonderful set of options by his landscape designer, Jeff, for both our front and back yards, including replacing the buckthorn hedges with beautiful sets of native indigenous bushes. With the design now in place, we are very happy with the results as well as with how the crew executing this design worked with us. I really appreciated the daily check-ins with the project manager, Rob J., who was very proactive in letting us know what was being planned each day and in following through on requests we made as the work proceeded. We were also very impressed with the skills of the work crew and especially its foreman, David, who beautifully trimmed some existing bushes and trees in our front yard. David and his team exhibited tremendous professionalism and clearly took pride in their work. At the conclusion of each day, all work areas were left clutter-free, with all tools removed. I strongly recommend Hursthouse Landscaping and Design!

The entire Hursthouse team has been an absolute pleasure to work with. We started discussing our vision for an empty lot adjacent to to our home in 2021. Bob and his design team walked us through their entire process, and did a fantastic job pulling ideas out of my wife and I, iterating and refining a plan, working within our budget, and responding to any questions or concerns we had every step of the way. All the other design and install companies we talked to were the same - they just asked us where we wanted stuff put. Hursthouse was the first company we talked to that truly understood design and how to partner with customers to realize their vision together. Special thanks to Bob and Kyle for walking us through many design sessions, Ann for always being there for billing questions, Luis our Rockstar project manager, and Bill with the maintenance team.

We completely enjoyed the service and workmanship provided by Hursthouse. From start to finish, we felt listened to and taken care of. John Algozzini was our consultant on the project, which involved a redesign of our entry, front walk, new plantings on three sides and artistic hard scape. In collaboration of the design process, Rosa also came out to assess and measure, in our quest for a symmetrical approach to our mid-century modern home. Project Manager Luis Arteaga communicated with us throughout the entire project. All were accessible to our every question and flexible with our scheduling requests. We were overjoyed at the outcome of the work. The new design took us from boring to eye-catching, and tremendously opened up our space. Hursthouse incorporated the right color schemes and proportions with new pavers, limestone, blue stone and the plantings themselves. I will also say the staff workers were some of the nicest and most respectful we’ve ever encountered. We enjoyed having them on our property, and were glad they were our crew.

I had a top-notch experience from start to finish! Initially, I was worried that Hursthouse wouldn't want to take on my project because it wasn't a huge one ($10K max) and many companies only like to take the really lucrative jobs. But Bob Hursthouse met with me, first via Zoom and then in person, and he really listened to what I was looking for. He and his team drew up a plan for me, and then made changes based on my feedback. When it was time for the installation, Louis and his team did an incredible job, finishing the project in a day in a half! I can't tell you how happy I am with the final product. It really exceeded my expectations!

My wife and I have had an outstanding experience with Hursthouse. We recently renovated our patio, including with new pavers and a grill, and plan to complete the project in Spring, 2022, with a water feature. lighting, and plantings. We built a new sustainable home in 2018 and started from scratch with the landscaping. Bob and his team came up with an incredible design that used native, drought tolerant plants in keeping with the sustainability theme. We live on a lake so they helped us design a landscape that's very natural and helps keep the geese off the property. They've also done hardscape work adding rock retaining walls, building a fire pit and creating walkways & paths with bluestone. This year we asked them to clad a couple patios and stairways with bluestone and they work they have done is amazing! Everyone we've worked with from Bob, the owner, to the crews laying stone and planting have been very professional, courteous and a joy to work with. They always leave our yard looking more beautiful than when they arrived!

From design to construction, everybody on the Hursthouse team (and subcontractors) was knowledgeable, responsive, and overall exceptional to work with. Bob and his team did a great job with our major driveway project. We had about 1/4 mile of driveway in serious disrepair and Hursthouse replaced it with a beautiful high-end driveway/parkway that is like a private cul de sac. The design is both functional and aesthetic. The team was courteous and always kept us in the loop. This is our second major project with them and both have been excellent. We highly recommend Hursthouse!

We have been working with Bob for 12 years. This year we decided to put in a pool. Bob and his team have managed the entire project, reconfigured the existing landscape, and provided additional plans to give us privacy with the new pool. The staff that does the work at the house is second to none. They are on time, they do their work, they cleanup, and outside of the beautiful work they do, you would never know they were there. From our initial interaction with Bob and his team, we knew we were in the best of hands. We wanted to make some changes to our landscaping and LOVED the vision that Bob created and brought to life! His team is attentive to EVERY detail, no stone is left unturned, no weed left in a bed, and we couldn't be MORE delighted with the finished product! Shortly after all of the new plantings were installed, I noticed a crew outside one morning replacing one of the trees...I went outside to speak to the crew and they let me know that Bob was not happy with that tree in proportion to the others. Bob Hursthouse came out to give us direction on a professional outdoor meeting space we imagined for our marketing agency. Shortly thereafter he returned with a design and proposal. There were a lot of details that we wanted to be exact. That's what we got. The installation of our 1000 sq/ft blue stone patio is exactly what we hoped for in the space. Clients that use our space always comment on the Hursthouse work.

We approached the Hursthouse team to redo our wrap-around porch. We were so dissappointed with the look of our composite decking... after meeting with Bob we agreed on ipe hardwood for the porch and stairs.. as the project commenced we expanded to include the deck in the back, followed by the loveliest (and sturdy) arbor to embrace the existing seat wall, We were and continue to be thrilled with the final look and product. The Hursthouse staff replaced not only the composite decking but the stairs, railings, leveled the existing flooring, added lighting.. we could not be happier. After 15 years in our home, our builder-selected landscaping had become overgrown and unkempt. Enter Hursthouse Landscape Architects. From discussion to design, renovation to renewal, the staff and crew at Hursthouse Landscape were incredible. We started the project in the fall (mid October) and finished the end of November. Through the course of the entire project, the design team made certain that all of our needs were being met, and the installation crew ensured a clean and tidy project from beginning to end every single day. Just a quick update, 1.5 years after we moved into our home we are STILL extremely pleased with how Hursthouse stands by their work. There was a small issue with our in ground drainage system this summer after our area received record amounts of rain. Bob took one look and the next week there was a crew out here, reconfiguring, switching out the drains to a larger size, and adding river rocks to keep the mulch from washing away. Never received an invoice. They stand by their work! Also, this year they opened a maintenance division and we have been very happy and impressed with the level of detail they are executing with that! Highly recommend using them for ongoing maintenance as well, it's a comfort to know the same character, commitment to excellence, and attention to detail continues on in this new wing. We've gotten loads of compliments on our summer pots out front, I can't wait to see what they do for the winter season. Bill is one talented guy.

Of all the house projects we've done, the backyard patio and landscaping remain the very best experience, with the most exquisite results. The design is a knockout. At one point we wanted to put something into the design, but Bob talked us out of it. I'm so glad he did. While the artistic work was great, we can also assure you that the technical work is equally impressive. Hursthouse solved a multi-home drainage problem by installing a massive underground pump that spits the water into the street, away from our backyards. After the work was done, Hursthouse provided us with a manual for maintaining our landscaping, month by month! The only negative thing I can say is that Hursthouse's pricing is high. We have an old house that has sunk down into the ground and gets a lot of water in the basement because the drainage is really bad. Bob did a beautiful design for our back yard to not only help with the water drainage but also a beautiful design adding a patio with beautiful plantings! Bob Hursthouse and his awesome staff and crew are the best in the business and were such a joy to work with. Bob is a visionary and has such a keen eye for what the possibilities of a landscape could look like. They love nature and are incredibly knowledgeable of their plant choices and products. They brought their ideas to life in a professional and masterful way. We had lived in our home for 12 years and had gone through a few landscapers but with lackluster results. Our home is a lovely French country design and sits on a beautiful 1-acre lot, and it deserved a landscape to match. Bob showed us his vision and we knew it would be spectacular. Bob and his crew dug up our entire property and started from scratch. What we have now is magazine-worthy, just an amazing transformation. They are the ultimate contractors--friendly, experts in their craft, timely and fun to work with. We are happy to say that Bob and his wife, Robbi, along with Charlie, our project manager, have become good friends of ours through the years and are such nice, warm and honest people.

The Hursthouse team patiently spent many hours developing a detailed and extensive renovation plan for our entire property. Major features of the plan included: --installing a brick paver driveway bordered by a snapcut limestone retaining wall --installing bluestone front entry walk and porch --rebuilding backyard bluestone patio and new courtyard area with water fountain and cast iron fence border --extensive landscape lighting both front and back --installing imported planter urns on pedestals --extensive tree & shrub planting, perennials & ground cover. The design added great value and enhanced our enjoyment of our property in ways we never anticipated.
