Richard is a Licensed Landscape Architect in MD, and VA who brings over 16 years of design experience to Professional Grounds. Richard has gained considerable experience with his extensive work on award-winning residential projects throughout the Chesapeake Region. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University where he received awards of design recognition and led his class in academic excellence. When it comes to design, Richard is proud to employ a unique and dynamic approach, which provides Clients with a comprehensive design process that is a collaborative effort between him, the Client, the architects, the engineers as well as other design professionals. Richard creates outdoor spaces with fluid transitions through the use of extensive design, material, plant and construction knowledge. Ultimately, this philosophy provides his Clients with functional outdoor spaces that are uniquely appropriate for their environment, reflect their personal tastes, while maintaining consistency of the property’s architectural style. Absolutely love our new patio and fire pit! Richard and his team brought exceptional creativity and enthusiasm to create a space that our family is really enjoying. The fire pit is a huge hit with our teenagers and their friends! We also appreciate that the project was delivered on time and on budget! Thank you!

I have had the fortune of working with Richard. He has the ability to transform any situation into an opportunity, with a clear sensitivity to the client as well as the landscape. The landscape design-build industry is extremely valuable, and Richard has been able to practice such a rare form of landscape architecture within. His realm of abilities spanning across the fields of landscape architecture, architecture, horticulture, carpentry, and others are what make Richard Sweeney truly one of the best of the best. It is an extreme pleasure to continue learning from Richard.

I had the great fortune of working with Richard when I first moved into my Annapolis home 8 years ago. He initially designed and oversaw a small landscaping project in our back yard. He has since designed and overseen a complete transformation of our outdoor space. I had the opportunity to work with Richard Sweeney on a number of residential projects at different scales. Regardless of the projects size, Richard always came to the drawing table with the same high-level of excitement. It was incredible to witness how quickly he could develop a thoughtful vision and put it on paper. His vast knowledge and experience with plants, materials and construction administration is sure to show in any completed project.
