The design team took the time to understand the challenges with our current space and provided thoughtful solutions to transform our home.

We hired Mattice Design to help us remodel and update our master bathroom and hall bathroom. We could not have been more pleased with the results. Our new master bathroom is not only striking, but Justin’s design added a lot more space to a previously crowded one! We especially liked the way he incorporated glass and an updated lighting scheme. He also suggested installing a back-lit mirror, which really put the room over the top! We had the same results with our hall bath design. Better lighting, updated colors and material, and a beautiful outcome! We would highly recommend hiring Mattice Design for any remodel project. We did a major kitchen renovation that involved tearing down walls and moving an exterior door to create an open concept kitchen. Our contractor recommended Justin and he did an amazing job with the design. We ended up with all the things on our wish list including more counter space and cabinets. Justin had to tweak things a bit during the renovation when we found some pipes in the walls and had to adjust the design. That was a painless and quick process and we love our new kitchen.

I was very happy with Mattice Design. Justin worked very hard to come up with clever solutions to some complicated cabinets. The cabinets came in and they were better than expected. I work in the industry and can confidently say, I was happy to be referred to Justin and will order from him again!

We hired Mattice Design in November, 2015 to help with a gut and remodel of an 80 year old row home in Washington DC. It wouldn't be sufficient to say "Justin is a good designer" because good designers are easy to come by. But his ability to actively listen, and then frankly but diplomatically steer us away from bad decisions was impressive. We didn't feel like he was just trying to check boxes, or sell us on things, but really wanted us to walk away with a good product that we'd be happy with for years to come. So here we are, 5 years later, and a kitchen faucet has developed a leak. It has a warranty, but we no longer have the original purchase paperwork, so Justin has sent us a new faucet. That is way above and beyond what would be expected. I can't recommend Mattice Design enough. We would (likely will) hire him again in the future.

Justin was absolutely the best at designing our modern kitchen! It could not have met our expectations more closely...he immediately grasped our tastes and suggested various ideas that no one else had contemplated. Since he is also a licensed contractor, he knows what and how ideas can be implemented. Justin was extremely communicative and responsive. He went with us whenever we wanted guidance on product selection and offered excellent ideas but at the same time, he was always open and accepting to our own ideas. We’ve used design/build firms in the past but this is the first time we ever used an independent designer and a separate contractor. It absolutely was the most seamless project we’ve ever had...Justin and the installer that he recommended worked hand in hand. Justin was often present when work was being done and he and the install contractor were in constant communication. He has such a repertoire of contacts and sources, you are guaranteed to have the most unique, custom kitchen possible. Hands down, this was the most pleasant renovation we have done due to Justin. And our kitchen is gorgeous!

We hired to Justin Mattice to design our new kitchen and a bar area in our basement. Justin – from start to finish – has been absolutely amazing. His depth of knowledge of styles and products (including cabinets, lighting, tiles, countertops, color) and ability to envision a projector are incredible... all of which are complemented by his depth of experience and quality relationships at various vendors/distributors. Everything, from initial meetings to design drawings to install, have been hands-on, smooth, and professional. We couldn't be any happier. In nearly 20 years of home ownership (and countless interactions with contractors and design professionals), there's only a few improvement folks that I'd be excited about working with again – Justin is definitely one of them. He's fantastic!

Justin designed an extensive remodeling of a 100+ DC Rowhouse including Kitchen, Master Bathroom and Powder Room. His ability to make use of the limited space was masterful. It was almost like he created usable space out of thin air. Justin designed a stunningly beautiful and modern kitchen. He took every bid of feedback from us and integrated it into the layout and design of our dream kitchen. He was a great partner in our first renovation project and even allowed us to drag him through the aisles at Floor and Decor where he patiently helped us through countless tile samples.

Project: The Master Bedroom Conundrum Description: An obliquely shaped room, roughly 24 feet x 21 feet with 18 foot vaulted ceilings and three windows. What the customer wanted: In a word? Help. The bed looked odd on every wall. Every piece of furniture looked ill-fitting and ill-conceived. The Process: Justin explained why the room posed the challenges it did, and immediately began sketching to explain. He then presented us with options, and in short order, he was showing us plans for the layout of our new room, and we were meeting to discuss fabrics for window treatments. The Finished Product: New furniture (to include, among other things, new lighting fixtures and ceiling fan), new shelving, a stone topped built-in coffee bar (complete with mini-fridge), window treatments (and fabric wall panels), and, naturally, a completely new color scheme. (Note the molding.) The Result: We could not be happier with the way the room turned out. To look at it now, you might shrug and say “but of course”, because it looks so perfect, and it only makes sense. But remove all of the furniture. Remove the molding and the window treatments. Remove the panels on the walls. Remove the built-in bar and the shelving. Now, paint the room a solid color (floor to ceiling), and try it again. There. You’ve just discovered the magic of Justin. And you know why you should hire him. Can he design a bathroom or a kitchen? Certainly. He’s done that for us, too. (Please see the photos of all of the projects he’s done for us. He’s terrific.) He worked with us to completely gut our twenty year old master bath, transforming it from a “builder grade” bathroom, to a beautiful space which, years later, causes us to smile as we walk into the room and look at the tile, the countertop, or the shower… He designed a kitchen that not only changed the way our house looks (people are nothing short of stunned when they walk through our front door now), but it has changed the way we are able to cook and enjoy our home. Justin worked with us, meticulously, drawing and redrawing cabinets, drawers, table heights, draw pulls, and floor plans—until questions we didn’t even know we had, were answered. He listened to us, ensuring he incorporated the way we use our kitchen, as well as the types of materials and colors that we prefer. Justin is brilliant. He’s an absolute pleasure to work with. And he's there every step of the way, to make sure the process runs smoothly, from start to finish. As anyone who embarks upon a major project knows, communication is key. Justin makes sure you never feel as though you’re on your own. We laugh and tell people our home is soon to be “House by Justin”. There’s a reason for that. Work with him just once. You’ll be looking for the next project, too.

Mattice Design has updated my kitchen and updated three bathrooms and I love all the work that's been done. Justin Mattice provided us with an experience that made us the happy recipients of an aesthetically thoughtful and organized kitchen. We avoided renovating our moldy 50+ year-old kitchen which had in its previous life, been tweaked by do-it-yourself owners. We were anxious working with designers/architects given a less that happy outcome with a previous project and we delayed approaching the project which took on a much larger scope than anticipated. We interviewed 4 designers earnestly and Justin was the only one who provided multiple floor-plan options based on his observation of our lifestyle and how we occupied our kitchen space. He noted our 3 spoiled pets, their substantial feeding area, our many pet food recyclables, newspaper subscriptions, exploding mail volume, our limited space with its oddly placed appliances, and the narrow doorway to dining room adjacent to a non-functional wall with limited storage. He also took in account my large spice collection, cookware and gadgetry that I was continuously hauling out of a bottom drawer. Justin was dedicated to providing scheduled meeting times where we went over in meticulous detail, the floor plan options. Initially, we met almost weekly (sometimes more) and then he was easily reached and visible as needed. He worked intimately with the contractor and workmen and was onsite during the project to ensure that his plans were followed. His recommendation for flooring, space management (cabinetry), appliances were expertly presently with pros and cons. We never felt pressured to submit to his recommendations if we were uncomfortable. He managed our budget expectations. We hope to work with him again.

My wife and I hired Mattice Design to redo our kitchen. It was completely gutted and everything replaced; one wall was partially removed and transformed into a peninsula. As we were first timers to kitchen renovations, Justin guided us from the beginning. He took our "vision" and translated it to paper. We were impressed with his knowledge of design, architecture and materials. He knew the right places to go just to find the items we wanted. What impressed us the most was that he respected our tastes and choices. He never imposed his own opinions but rather worked with ours and made constructive suggestions. Justin helped us put together a really nice 1.5 bathroom complete remodel. His advice throughout the project was very helpful and guided us to do things we would not have thought of like the fully floating shower seat. His recommendations for suppliers and vendors was also invaluable--all were very helpful and provided top service. Finally, Justin was really understanding about answering my myriad questions via email in a prompt manner.

Justin designed the kitchen exactly the way I wanted it. He did not have an easy time because the color scheme is unusual (red and white), but he even found options for me on the tile. I am very happy with the way it came out. The contractor he linked up with did an admirable job. I have already recommended him to two friends, one of whom has a new kitchen and is very pleased with it and the other getting ready to start construction.
