Since its founding in 1992, Mark English Architects has designed numerous residential and entertainment spaces throughout California, Arizona, Texas and Mexico. The firm has a special interest in building in the urban context, with half of its work occurring in San Francisco. Mark English Architects offers a designer's sense of artistry, supported by practical knowledge gained from years of direct hands-on building experience, having worked as a carpenter on his first realized home design at the age of 19. The team respectfully guides the the client towards what could, and what should, happen in a space - so that they are both pleased and surprised by the results. Mark's undergraduate experience at CalPoly included rigorous training in engineering and structural principles. Incorporating practical experience with structural systems and energy efficiency to the project early helps to streamline the design process. Graduate studies at the Syracuse University campus in Florence, Italy complemented Mark's interests in Greco-roman and Mesoamerican archaeology and history. As a licensed architect, Mark has supported the profession and his colleagues through participation in the AIA, the local AIA's Small Business Committee, and by coaching his peers on new strategies for social media and marketing. He has also promoted principles of energy-efficient design as it relates to compliance with California's Title 24 energy code, as well as green building programs such as Green-point Rating and the California Solar Initiative. Mark English is the editor of the respected online magazine"The Architects' Take". The Firm is located in Downtown San Francisco.

I recommend Mark without reservation. He designed three projects: Additional Dwelling Unit behind my house in Los Altos; for my daughter, a tricky San Francisco remodel of a burned house; and for my neighbor, a new two story. Nothing but rave reviews. Very adroit at working with city staff, contractors, workers, and family. The workers, carpenter, framer, etc., have been impressed with 'how he could get so much into such a small place." They're proud, I'd say. As owner and future resident of the ADU, I've appreciated his skill in design, leadership for our contractor, restraint in staying within budget, and adherence to schedules. Good guy.

I have worked with Mark and his team in three different projects. Mark has a vast knowledge of architectural trends, yet he is no stranger to classic concepts. He is extraordinarily creative, knows enough about structural engineer which allows him to design somethings without having to consult with an engineer (sent to engineer later for calcs but not for concept review). He has a keen eye for design and finish elements yet he does not mind getting "his hands dirty" and work on the job site with the contractors and subs, once we spent close to three hours drawing on the walls the exact position of each light switch and outlet. Besides his professionalism and knowledge, Mark is fun to work with, easy to deal with, great working with planning and building officials and his support team is just awesome. I recommend Mark and his firm wholeheartedly..

We experienced the devastation of loosing our home to the recent California Wildfires. We were blind sighted by all of the necessary items needed to initiate our home rebuilding project. I knew Mark from a community volunteer experience and elected to hire him as our architect. It has proven to be one of the best decisions we have made. He has helped us to navigate the unfamiliar landscape of permit red tape and has opened our minds to various design options we would not have otherwise considered. In short... I think we would have felt the devastation of our loss even more deeply had we not had Mark's kindness and expertise to guide us. He patiently answers our questions, and has assisted us in finding the endless engineers and other professionals needed to begin our project. In short, we know that our home will not only be rebuilt , but rebuilt to an even better and exceptional standard.

Mark has designed (2) extensive remodels for existing houses I've owned. The first one was in Los Gatos in which we took a very dated looking 50's ranch house with little character, and created a wonderful and whimsical looking storybook style house with reclaimed materials. The end product was very authentic and unique. I lived there for 16 years and when I had to relocate, I asked him if he would be willing travel to Santa Barbara to work on a second project. With this project we took a fairly tasteless 70's modern style house and redesigned it inside and out into an updated nouveau barn style with so much character that I know it will stand the test of time. I've enjoyed every second of the process with him. He is a great listener and though the styles I chose may not be what he would choose for himself, he graciously took on the challenge and again I am overjoyed with the results. Mark is very professional and has a delightful sense of humor. Even when I became frustrated with the challenges of the building and planning departments, he maintained his cool throughout the process. His staff is also a joy to work with. I would definitely hire his firm again.

We had the privilege of working with Mark English at Mark English Architect. He worked closely with us at all steps, from ideas on initial designs, to working with the city to get permits, to assisting us to find the right contractor for the project. We are very appreciative how accommodating they are with my requests and appointment times. He had a great team of talented designers. Mark is very professional and credential at what he does and he always takes his time to listen to my concerns and gives me valuable advices. We are grateful of everything that Mark and his team brought to the project and are looking forward to working with him in the future.

We used Mark’s services on two remodeling projects in San Francisco, and both times Mark has done fantastic jobs; we are extremely pleased with the results. I am an Interior Designer and I have been working with Mark English for the last 18 months on my own home, which is a very complex remodel on Telegraph Hill. I knew the first time that I met Mark that we would work well together. He is an excellent listener and great communicator and does not let ego get in the way. He is extremely creative while at the same time knowing what the complexities are in the building process. He is always mindful of budget constraints and always looks for the smartest way to implement a design element. Additionally, Mark has been incredibly helpful in navigating the complexities of the entitlement process; both dealing with difficult neighbors and neighborhood associations, as well as the Planning and Building Departments of SF. This review would not be complete without acknowledging Mark's staff. Brian & Greg are both architects and are extremely talented, responsive and thorough.

I have worked with Mark English numerous times over the course of the last five years in my capacity as a construction project manager. I have participated with him in new home construction as well as remodelling and enjoy working with him. I am currently working with him on two very challenging projects. One in Los Altos Hills and one in San Francisco. The house in San Francisco is particularly challenging as it is a historically significant home. I have found him to be an extremely talented architect as well as easy to work with. His plans are typically well thought out and well detailed. He makes building his vision easy to accomplish. He is also responsive and flexible when the usual construction conflicts or glitches occur making changes as necessary to keep the project moving forward yet still maintining the desired design. I would highly recommend Mark for architectural and design services.

We are working with Mark and his team on a large remodeling project in Noe Valley. Mark has been wonderful to work with. He has provided great advice on our design options, was very knowledgeable about the permitting process in San Francisco and was helpful during the contractor selection phase. Mark has a lot of experience, is very creative and has wonderful taste. We have been very happy with his work.

I am currently working with Mark on a remodel. I found him on Houzz as I liked some of his projects and was not disappointed. Mark listens extremely well, understands what I want and than makes it better. He has a great sense of space, light and general flow. I also like his pragmatic approach - he knows where things make a difference and an investment is needed, and where one can get away with potential cheaper approaches.. He is also just a really nice and inspiring person to work with..
