Design Workshop, named 2008 National Firm of the Year by the American Society of Landscape Architects, is an internationally renowned garden design, landscape architecture and land planning practice. Our gardens respond to our firm’s overarching goal of bringing the eloquence of the land into the design of the entire project. Our philosophy, accompanied by our breadth of diverse experience, has gained national recognition, as has our attention to innovation, sustainability and design execution. In our 45 years, we’ve designed landscapes across the country and abroad; a high-altitude ranch in Aspen; a productive garden surrounding a historic home in the Napa Valley; a modern homestead within a 4,000-acre ranch near Santa Fe; an urban garden in Washington, D.C.; a lakefront art garden in the Texas Hill Country; a contemporary retreat along the banks of the Snake River near Yellowstone; a vivid desert garden in Tucson; and a secluded island villa in Panama. The narrative capacity of the landscape is present in all of our gardens, represented in the spatial relationships between elements in each composition, the arrangement of plant materials, water in its varying forms, the interplay of landscape and architecture, and the ability to manage – and celebrate – the surrounding natural environment. For each garden, we seek a partnership with our clients in design that is creative, thoughtful, and truly indicative of the ways in which people experience the outdoor setting. Our gardens are identifiable because we interact with the landscape, taking our contextual cues from the climate, physiographic features, textures, patterns and raw materials of the landscape. The end result makes a significant contribution to establishing a unique design character – otherwise known as regionalism. We have published three books: New Gardens of the American West, Towards Legacy and, most recently, Garden Legacy.
