Karen and Guy Vidal, the creative forces behind the Vidal Design Collaborative team, have provided interior and exterior design services to over 70 residences in the Los Angeles area. Karen Vidal’s passion for restoring and remodeling homes with historic and classic architecture has enabled her to become the “designer of choice“ in Silver Lake, Los Feliz and surrounding areas: Glendale, Pasadena and Hancock Park. Design Vidal transformations have also taken place in Santa Monica, Venice, Brentwood, Topanga Canyon and Bel Air.

We have worked with Karen and Guy to provide lighting on a couple of projects, and we are obsessed with how well they use color in all their projects. I own a colorful lighting company, and I've seen hordes of designers work in different ways to incorporate color into their projects, but I must say that Vidal Design Collaborative's looks are among the most cohesive and well-executed we've seen. We hope to have the chance to work with them more in the future!

We had been excited to work with Design Vidal for a long time as my husband and I came across their work many years ago in an open house. Wow, were we disappointed. We hired them to do a major kitchen remodel including taking down walls. We paid the $5000 retainer and finally more than a month later all they produced was a vague floor plan. This floor plan had a range in a center island, which Is a kitchen design aspect I've always disliked. The designer did not expend any effort getting to know us or asking us about our likes, dislikes, wants and needs. When we asked them to provide something with a little more detail, they told us they have an architect that can provide elevations, but it would be an additional cost.
Before we were able to start on the kitchen, we needed to complete some other work upstairs which Design Vidal was in charge of. Well, they didn't design the stairwell right or the master closet. In the stairway they left out a skirt molding, which we thought was important in trying to create the look we were after. They said we should have told them that beforehand. Isn't that the designer's job, to plan ahead? We feel the design decisions were left to the subcontractors.
Their office was disorganized and a quality employee left after only working there two months. A quality employee meaning someone that actually took our phone calls. The designer was almost completely absent from the job site. She visited three times during the four months they were hired. We were left to compose lengthy emails in order to communicate. When it came to selecting a lighting fixture, the designer told us just go pick out something at this store in N. Hollywood.
We found out later that they were busy rebranding their business and this is why they had no time for our project. But, they had time to collect our money. When we finally fired them from our job, we hired another designer who has been amazing to work with. Her retainer was half the amount and it included four different floor plan ideas, which had color elevations and sample materials. This is what a designer's job is and she's able to put together a very detailed cost for the whole scope of the project.

Working with the whole Design Vidal team has been an absolute pleasure. I would absolutely recommend them for your home project. Over the course of a year's+ worth of work, our very nice, but bland Silver Lake home that we were outgrowing became an exciting dream home for our family of 5. Because of Design Vidal our 3 bd, 2.5 bath became a very tasteful (in no way McMansion) 5 bd, 4 bath with a new master bedroom, a massive open kitchen (as opposed to the tiny galley we had before), a useable and more sustainable backyard and a wonderful pool. Amazing stuff.
My wife and I always knew our project would be challenging. We were trying to figure out what we wanted and how we could do a big renovation once rather than doing it in incremental steps. Karen and Guy made this process a breeze. They managed every detail of the project very closely and ensured that it turned into exactly what we wanted. They also worked well within our timeline and helped us keep track of the project's costs, with the goal of keeping us on budget. We had a big project, which forced us to move out of our house, and we were able to get back in when we wanted and to keep it as close to budget as humanly possible.
We have zero complaints about our architect and contractors, which is a testament to Guy and Karen too. The people they work with are all top-notch professionals. I think we are some of the few people we know who have done remodeling and cannot say a bad word about our general contractor. Karen and Guy made the difference. For all of the work in our home, they solicited bids for us and, with their help, made sure to get the right people. Karen and Guy also helped us navigate the city permitting bureaucracy, doing all the heavy lifting and making sure piece of construction we did was permitted and legal. Having project managers like the Vidals is extremely important and made our hectic lives much less so.
On the overall design, the look of the place, and the finishings, Karen absolutely rocked it. Her taste is impeccable and she always has suggestions on furniture, wallpaper, art, rugs, lighting and every design element you can think of (and more). But what sets her apart is her ability to get a sense of the client's taste, move in that direction, and come up with ideas and solutions that you would never think of.
Karen and Guy are always accessible and helpful. They beautifully realized our home project, navigated us through tough times and were consummate professionals throughout the process.

Our experience with Karen and Guy Vidal was particularly under whelming. clunky and stilted with very little creativity. Every step of the process was riddled with rookie mistakes. Short list: Electrical inspection took 3 attempts, rooms painted wrong colors, water heaters not installed to code, gas lines not anticipated in kitchen island, size of sink not properly accounted for and drawers had to be resized, floors were not properly protected…
Two items of special note were the 12 glass paned Douglass fir doors that we had chosen for our interior and that were to be stained on site. Karen claimed she had done this before and assured us the crew on the job would be capable of staining them properly. A week later after a dozen failed attempts to stain the doors and re-sanding them almost through the veneer, they had to be outsourced. Karen paid for the outsourcing but we paid for materials, labor and a lost week of time.
Second, after we walked the house with Karen’s electrician to determine requirements (I commented to everyone that “I think this is going to be a bit more expensive then Karen’s budget) days later we had a follow up meeting and sure enough the electrical QUADRUPLED! I asked the electrician if he had spoken to Karen about the scope and budget before the walk-thru and he said no he hadn’t. This was typical of every trade she brought in.
Just prior to the start of the job Karen reversed her earlier recommendation and insisted we hire a General Contractor. There were numerous deficiencies and we ended up taking the contractor, Michel Kyle, owner of Cornerstone Construction to the California Contractors Licensing Board for arbitration. We easily won. We were embarrassed for Mr. Kyle.
There were countless billing errors on the job, mostly overbilling, charging for workers tools i.e. nozzle tip for sprayers, enough nails and sheetrock to build another house, and gasoline for the workers commute.
Additional novice mistakes Karen made include having the bathroom cabinet and kitchen island cabinets made the wrong color and custom couch built 19” too big,. She had the right measurements and other details but gave the wrong info and never double checked.
While on our job she also took several trips to places like India and Vermont, Karen was also involved at the time, creating and promoting her tile designs for retail sale. In the end the 11 week projected job completion missed by a mile and when we moved out of our rental and back into the house workers were still here spraying lacquer which made all of us sick.
We spent more than $250,000 with Karen. We now have a beautiful home. I give all the credit to my wife for her creativity and tenacity in spite of Karen Vidal’s obstruction and incompetence and to the new designer we had to bring in after we gave up on Karen
Karen my be competent as a bathroom or single room decorator but she was clearly way out of her league with a more complex, larger scale project requiring scheduling, budgeting and design work outside of her comfort zone.

Dear Client. I am saddened by your response. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.
We have successfully designed and remodeled over 120 homes since 1999. We've made many customers happy, which is reflected in our Yelp and Houzz reviews. The GC we recommended to the client, Michael Kyle, of Cornerstone Construction, has held a CA Contractor's License (#775449) without blemish since 2001, has worked in construction for 25 years and has remodeled 200 homes.
Regarding the short list: it's not uncommon for inspectors to have multiple corrections before approving. Adjustments on site had to be made to custom cabinets that were hitting the gas lines - it was a simple adjustment and not unusual for custom work. The sink came with small shelves, which were part of the sink set up - an adjustment had to be made. Again, it was a simple adjustment and not unusual for custom work. There was a lot of concerted and conscientious effort to protect the floors. When covers were pulled back for cabinet guys they were promptly put back.
Regarding the 12 pane doors: With traditional staining techniques doors turned out blotchy as they were not absorbing the stain properly. So we decided to send them to the cabinet maker who used a different method. The Clients paid for the time and materials that went into the failed attempts. Total: $400. Contractor and designer in a generous gesture to sooth the situation, paid out of pocket $3000 to have doors stained by the cabinet maker. So ultimately the clients paid $400 for a $3,000 job, and we more than rectified the situation both creatively and financially.
Re: Cost Quadrupled: In Nov 2013 - 4 months prior to construction - the project budget was $179K before fees. In June 2014 - at end of job - total cost was $279K budget before fees. Here's the breakdown of the $100K increase:
- Cabinets: $32K increased to approx $85K due to Clients adding more cabinets & built ins throughout the home.
- Lighting Fixtures: $7K increased to $20K due to Clients choosing expensive light fixtures.
- Rough Electrical: $6.5K increased to $21,500 due to faulty wiring discovered once construction began and due to client's decision based on designer's recommendation to take the opportunity to customize the lighting.
- Finish Electrical: $1,200 increased to $2,900 to pay to hang / install the additional fixtures purchased by Clients.
- Counters - $4,000 increased to $10,270, triggered by increased scope.
- Drywall - $2,200 increased to $6,366, triggered by increased scope.
Re Claim by client that "11 week project was missed by a mile". Contract stipulated 4.6.14 move in. Actual move in date, PER CLIENT, was 4.10.14. 4 days late. Work continued inside clients home for another 3 weeks after move in. Unfortunately the living room built-ins did have to get completed on site and the lacquer smell was strong. In hindsight we should have recommended they get accommodations for a few days. Considering the 50% increase in the scope of work, the project was completed in a very timely fashion.
Re: CSLB complaint against GC: Clients filed a complaint against the GC we recommended over $50,000 in damages. In Arbitration they were awarded $12,500 on only one issue: the floors. Summary: Client asked GC to refinish his existing factory made floors. Despite GC's recommendations to Clients NOT to refinish factory made floors, client insisted on it. Mr Kyle relented and floors were damaged. Since the flooring refinisher was hired by Mr Kyle, he was responsible for damaging the floors. Karen Vidal appeared on Mr Kyle's behalf at arbitration.
Re Over-Billing by GC: GC conceded some billing errors. However this was a cost plus project ad all receipts were submitted for inspection. Adjustments were made for items questioned by clients but no deliberate attempts were made to over bill. Both Designer and GC were not paid their final payments.
Re: Client giving all the credit for his beautiful home to his wife: Karen replies: I like collaborating with clients. I had fun with Robin--she has a good eye and a strong sense of direction. I opened up a dark depressing kitchen, added skylights, created a wonderful open floor kitchen/family room, added character to a valley tract house, created beautiful custom built-ins throughout. When I read Robin's emails I see appreciation for what I've done. I am proud of the work I've done for my clients but I'm also proud that I had the opportunity to stand by the GC I recommended and appear on his behalf at the arbitration. I understand that Clients may also be angry with me for this reason. I hope that despite their anger, the clients are enjoying the transformation of their home and that with time their anger will subside, and they will see the experience for what it was: an act of giving, using my talent and my heart.

Having gone through 5 significant remodeling projects, I feel I've got a pretty good baseline to judge how well a designer performs. After meeting Karen and Guy, and admiring their portfolio, my husband and I retained their services in 2012 to restore our then newly purchased 1926 Spanish home that had been a little neglected and gone through some bad "upgrades" in the 70's.
Karen was up for the challenge and exceeded all our expectations. (Full disclosure: we can be a pain in the a** clients because I have very particular tastes and my husband counts every penny, and he and I disagree on almost everything design-related -- frat house vs fabulous). By the way, Karen also turned out to be an excellent couples therapist! There were some challenges along the way -- lengthy construction delays, missing permits, etc., but Karen and Guy helped us work through it all. Ultimately, we had to fire our first general contractor due to delays, fraud, and trust issues, but Karen brought in her own crew and they did amazing work to complete the job. The end result is a beautiful, eclectic home that reflects a mix of Spanish, Moorish, Provencal, and Vintage California design. The home truly feels like an oasis, and almost everyone who has come by the house has commented that it reminds them of some faraway place, such as Italy, Turkey, Nicaragua, Mexico, and so on.
We had such a great experience that we didn't think twice about hiring Karen again when we purchased a place in Mammoth last year. While we've had generally good experiences previously working with other designers, I always felt it could have been a little better. After working with Design Vidal on our LA home, my husband and I agreed that there was no need to look anywhere else. Despite the 300-mile commute, Karen worked her magic and transformed a 1985 townhome into a modern interpretation of a ski lodge incorporating Scandinavian, rustic, and industrial elements. As a long-time appraiser in the area told me last week, it was the best remodel he had ever seen up there in his 20+ years of work.
What makes Karen especially effective is her ability to listen to and understand her clients, and then employing her expertise and creativity to achieve the clients' vision within a defined budget. When I sometimes got off-track (did I really once think that white canned track lights with elk-shaped cutouts would look cute?), she artfully put me back on the right path. They say good design can elevate the quality of life. Working with Karen has definitely taken ours up several notches.

Karen did an excellent job on our kitchen remodel. We incorporated many of her ideas which I never would've thought of. We wanted to stay with the mid century modern theme of the house and she just nailed it.

TRANSFORMATIVE... is the best word to describe the remodel of my dreams. My experience with Karen and her Design Vidal team was just that. The design and re-imagination of our master bedroom and bathroom as well as our 2 son's bathroom were perfect.
The spaces they created are more functional, more efficient and more beautiful!!!
I love every inch of our remodel and am forever grateful for Karen's talent.

I'm updating my previous review as we've finished another project with Design Vidal. The scale was larger on this one as we added a bathroom, many closets and custom built-ins creating a master suite. Though it is in essence a master oasis!
Our 1921 California bungalow was not working for our family of three with one bathroom and scant storage.
Karen transformed our large scale master into a contemporary workable space with lots of added storage that all looks original! How Karen added closets removed and added windows was nothing short of amazing. People that see it think it's all original cabinetry.
The bathroom is beautiful featuring bird tile of Karens own design with custom colors I got to pick.
Guy guided us through the budget and meetings with engineer as we changed a major beam and created more structure under the house to accommodate a free standing bathtub. Esteban the architect was wonderful and enthusiastic and had a great idea of creating a glass wall to separate the toilet area. We all loved that idea and I'm grateful for it everyday.
Karen reimagined this space in a way we never dreamed possible.
Seriously I was ready to "Love it, or List it"!
Well we love it. Will always call Design Vidal to get on the waiting list. We couldn't be happier.We don't embark on any project in our Silverlake CA. bungalow without consulting Design Vidal. My mantra is "WWKD"! What would Karen do?
When we remodeled our son's bedroom. They removed a closet wall adding a built-in desk area and custom cabinetry for closet and storage. It feels so much bigger and her ideas melded vintage with modern seamlessly.
Design Vidal is a Mom and Pop family business yet what a family of sophisticated coolness! We are blessed to have Design Vidal help
us realize our dream home.

We are extremely pleased to recommend Design Vidal. We did a major remodel of our 1930 Spanish house, and Karen's vision, taste, and support resulted in a home that we LOVE and that our visitors can't stop complimenting. I mostly just second what every other reviewer has already said… however, I also want to add that our project was a bit complicated, meaning that Design Vidal joined a team that already included an architect, a contractor, a landscaper, a pool contractor, etc. I've had friends who've done big remodels tell me horror stories about fights and difficult relationships between various members of a remodel team, but there was never any of that with us, and a huge part of the reason is that Karen is lovely, gracious, and PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS. She did an amazing job of making sure that the design aspects of the project, which included MANY small details, were never lost in the wash of other concerns. I am SO grateful that we decided to ask for Design Vidal's help!!

Karen and Guy Vidal may have saved my marriage. Three days after buying our house in Silver Lake, I declared that I wanted to sell it. I'm certain murder and/or divorce crossed my wife's mind. Then we brought in Karen and with her tremendous vision and, just as importantly, patience, the house was transformed. I love it, and I could not say that had we not worked with Karen.
She oversaw a six-month renovation that included the addition of a bedroom, a bathroom and the opening up of our kitchen/living room. The house was a major logistical puzzle-- built into the side of a hill, with no space to expand. When we bought it, there were virtually no closets. But Karen found nooks and crannies in the hillside and turned them into functional spaces. As a result, we now have an abundance of storage space, in addition to a living space we simply love.
Karen did all of this within the house's existing walls, maintaining its original details completely while updating it to accommodate our growing family.
I couldn't recommend Design Vidal more highly.

Our company has been given the opportunity to work with Karen & Guy for the last few years on several of their projects and it is a pleasure to do so each and every time. Karen is extremely talented and her work speaks volumes beyond imagination. We cannot say enough compliments about Design Vidal, their work ethic, talent and responsiveness to us as providers as well was what we've witnessed with their clients.
