Mace decided to paint the pine floor various colors before painting it the final shade of green. "We did this so that as the floor is worn, it looks like history is slowly being revealed," he says. He even told the contractor not to protect the floor while working, and the resulting dents gave the floor an even more aged appearance. "It also kept us from worrying about our own denting and dinging later," he says.
Bring Your Inspiration to Life Are you enamored of the tranquillity of a Japanese soaking tub with a view of a garden, or is a charming claw-foot tub in a cottage with roses twining outside the window more your cup of tea? Even if a bathroom remodel is not in the picture (and really, what could be more unrelaxing than a remodeling project?), there are lots of ways to bring the spirit of your chosen inspiration to life, right in your current bathroom. Here are a few ideas: For a Japanese-style soak, swap your old bathmat for a wooden version made from fragrant Japanese hinoki wood, and bring in a bonsai or ikebana-style vase of flowers. To get a cottage vibe, choose a white ruffled shower curtain, stack towels atop a chippy-painted chair and fill vintage teacups with candles. For a modern organic spa look, bring in fringed fouta towels, a teak stool and a few luxurious new bath products.
Lavender will be fine throughout most winters. If you live in an area subject to ground freezes and thaws, mulch with sand or gravel to protect the roots. In the coldest climates, cover the plants to protect them.

Set up a Potting Station A potting station doesn’t need to be fancy, just a sturdy work surface that can get good and dirty. If you can wrangle something with a few shelves to store empty pots and bags of potting soil, all the better.
This pot contains Caladium (center), Sweet Alyssum (small white flowers), Diascia (pink flowers), Violas (lavender flowers), and I think I added Nemesia, and used a delicate Bird's Foot Ivy.

In the entryway, the wood was used for a bench and coordinating shelf. The hooks on the shelf are doorknobs that were salvaged from the house during the renovation.
For a quick fix, add plug-in LED strip fixtures or battery-powered tap lights under the cabinets for extra brightness.

The kitchen in the 1930s Washington, D.C., home that architect Mark Lawrence inherited from his grandmother used to have linoleum, and the dining area featured a solid oak floor. After tearing down the walls separating the two rooms, he didn’t have the budget for new wood flooring in the kitchen. Since the pine subfloor under the linoleum lined up with the oak and was in great shape, he decided to use it as his finished floor. He had everything sanded down and applied turquoise Minwax stain to both materials.

Pretty pansies provide bright spots of color for beds and container gardens, blooming in late fall and early spring in colder climates, and through winter in mild locations. Try them mixed with Iceland poppies (Papaver nudicaule), cyclamen or covering pots of bulbs planted in fall. If you live in a cold-winter climate and missed planting pansies in fall, wait until spring to plant.
